Applying for Admission

Admission of entering freshmen is based on the completion of the required units of the College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) listed below with either a specific minimum grade-point average (GPA) or both a specific GPA and minimum standard test score.

Students must submit a high school transcript reflecting satisfactory completion of the following high school course requirements. (Provisional admission may be granted after six semesters of high school if the transcript indicates that courses to complete the CPC are underway; final admission will require a complete transcript.) An equivalent College Preparatory Curriculum from another state may be considered when evaluating nonresident student applications.

Mississippi Residents

Regular admission will be granted to the following:

1. All students completing the College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) with a minimum 3.20 high school GPA on the CPC.
2. All students completing the CPC with a minimum 2.50 high school GPA on the CPC and a minimum score of 16 on the composite ACT (or 760 on the SAT critical reading/mathematics).
3. All students completing the CPC with a class rank in the top 50 percent and a minimum score of 16 on the composite ACT (or 760 on the SAT critical reading/mathematics).
4. All students completing the CPC with a minimum 2.00 high school GPA on the CPC and a minimum composite score of 18 on the ACT (or 860 on the SAT critical reading/mathematics).
5. All students who meet certification requirements for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). This option is available to all freshman applicants.

In lieu of ACT scores, students may submit equivalent SAT scores. Students scoring below 16 on the ACT (composite) or the equivalent SAT are encouraged to participate in the yearlong Academic Support Program during their freshman year.

Nonresidents of Mississippi

The University of Mississippi is proud that our student body is enriched by a diverse pool of students from around the nation and the world. Nonresident applicants with a 2.50 GPA or higher on the College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) or equivalent CPC of the applicant's state of residence and a composite ACT score of 20 or higher (or 940 or higher on the SAT critical reading/mathematics) will be granted regular admission to the University.

Nonresident applicants who do not meet the above criteria are still encouraged to apply and will have the opportunity to provide additional information to support their applications.

In addition to grades and test scores, the University Admissions Committee may consider a variety of factors to assess a nonresident applicant's potential for success at Ole Miss and to make an admissions decision. The factors considered may include, but are not limited to, rigor of high school courses, diversity of background and experiences, school and community activities, work experience and special life circumstances. When considering the nonresident applicant, the Admissions Committee may review an application for evidence of excellence in academics, the arts, athletics, leadership, service, citizenship and character. The University's Admissions Committee will review all application materials to make a final admissions decision.

Admissions decisions are influenced by the institution's ability to provide an outstanding UM experience. Accordingly, all applicants should submit required materials well in advance of the term for which they intend to enroll. Nonresidents of Mississippi applying for first-year admission for the summer or fall terms are encouraged to submit all application materials no later than April 1.

Application Checklist

• Submit an online application by visiting admissions page and clicking Apply Online. A $35 application fee for Mississippi residents or a $50 application fee for nonresidents is required.
• Request high school to send official transcripts and senior class schedule.

Scholarships

General Information

To receive most forms of aid, you must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, and be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an eligible degree or certificate program. (International students should contact the Office of International Programs.)

Application Procedures

• Special Programs & Scholarships Application—Students who have applied for admission to the University of Mississippi should complete the Special Programs & Scholarships Application. Students can begin submitting the Special Programs & Scholarship Application September 1. Applicants will be asked to select the special programs or scholarships for which they would like admission or award consideration. Applicants can select any or all of the following: Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, Lott Leadership Institute, Croft Institute, Chinese Flagship Program,

Center for Manufacturing Excellence, Pharmacy, Residential College and Entering Freshman Scholarships. All students must complete the General Information section before gaining access to the individual tabs. Each tab must be submitted for the student to be fully considered for the corresponding special program or scholarship.
• Academic Excellence Scholarships—Submit the application for undergraduate admission. Be sure to have test scores sent to us electronically from the testing agency.
• Departmental Scholarships—Contact the department in which you will be majoring for scholarship availability. In general, students must be admitted to the university and should complete the Special Programs & Scholarships Application.
• FAFSA—Some scholarships require submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), so students should submit it to the federal processor. Be sure to list the University of Mississippi and our federal school code, 002440 on the FAFSA. First-time applicants can request a paper FAFSA by calling 800-4-FED-AID or file online at www.fafsa.gov.

Academic Excellence Scholarships

• Eligibility: A combination of test score and GPA as noted in the chart
• How to Apply: Submitting the application for Undergraduate Admission is the automatic application for this scholarship. Students must send test scores electronically to the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services. Our ACT code is 2250, and our SAT code is 1840.
• Deadline: Qualifying tests must be taken prior to enrollment as a new freshman at the University of Mississippi.

• These amounts are applicable to students with U.S. citizenship. International freshmen should reference scholarship information at www.international.olemiss.edu/finaidapply.html.

National Merit/Achievement Semifinalist/Finalist Awards

• Award Amount: Currently valued at $41,728 ($10,432 per year). Finalist may receive additional awards. This scholarship is awarded in lieu of the Academic Excellence Scholarship. Nonresidents will receive an additional scholarship to cover the full nonresident fee.
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen with National Merit/Achievement Semifinalist/Finalist status and a 3.0 or higher GPA.

• How to Apply: Gain admission to the University of Mississippi. Provide documentation of National Merit/Achievement standing.
• Deadline: Follows National Merit/Achievement announcement timeline.

National Merit/Achievement Finalist Awards

• Award Amount: $4,000 ($1,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen with finalist status and selection of Ole Miss as first choice and who are not receiving a National Merit Corporate Award.
• How to Apply: Gain admission to the University of Mississippi. Select Ole Miss as first-choice school with National Merit office.
• Deadline: Follows National Merit/Achievement announcement timeline.

Barnard Scholarship

• Award Amount: $12,000 ($3,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who have achieved National Merit/Achievement Finalist status and have a 3.0 or higher high school GPA.
• How to Apply: Apply for admission to the University of Mississippi and gain acceptance.
• Deadline: Follows National Merit/Achievement announcement timeline (typically beginning early February).

Holmes Scholarship

• Award Amount: $4,000-$10,000 ($1,000-$2,500 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are nonresidents and have at least a 26 ACT (1170 SAT) and at least a 3.5 high school GPA.
• How to Apply: Complete the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application.

• Deadline: March 1.

Bledsoe Scholarship

• Award Amount: $6,000-$10,000 ($1,500-$2,500 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are Mississippi residents who have at least a 24 ACT (1090 SAT) and at least a 3.5 high school GPA.
• How to Apply: Complete the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application.
• Deadline: March 1.

UM Foundation Scholarships

W.R. Newman Scholarship (1-2)

• Award Amount: $40,000 ($10,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are Mississippi residents; exceptional academic and leadership records required.
• How to Apply: Apply for admission to the University of Mississippi, and complete the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application.
• Deadline: January 15.

Robert M. Carrier Scholarship (2-4)

• Award Amount: $40,000 ($10,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are Mississippi residents; exceptional academic and leadership records required.

Sally Vick Hill (1)

• Award Amount: $40,000 ($10,000 per year).

Ole Miss FIRST Scholarship

• Award Amount: $18,000 ($4,500 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen with exceptional leadership records and a 3.0 or higher GPA; must agree to participate in a leadership-mentorship program.
• How to Apply: Apply for admission to The University of Mississippi, and complete the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application. In some cases, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) also is required to document financial need.
• Deadline: March 1.

Ole Miss Women's Council Scholarship

• Award Amount: $32,000 ($8,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen with exceptional leadership records and a 3.0 or higher GPA; must agree to participate in a leadership-mentorship program.
• How to Apply: Apply for admission to the university, and complete the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application. In some cases, the FAFSA also is required to document financial need.

• Deadline: March 1; priority date of January 15.

General Foundation Scholarships

• Award Amounts: $2,000-$18,000 ($500-$4,500 per year).
• Eligibility: Students who meet donor-specific requirements. Academic and leadership records considered. Some scholarships may be need-based. Funds are limited, and selection is competitive.
• How to Apply: Apply for admission to The University of Mississippi, and complete the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application. In some cases, the FAFSA is required to document financial need.
• Deadline: March 1; FAFSA priority date March 1.

UM Departmental Scholarships

Luckyday Success Scholarship

• Award Amounts: $8,000-$20,000 ($2,000-$5,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering Mississippi freshmen with 20 ACT or higher (940 SAT), 3.2 or higher GPA and remaining financial need after considering other scholarships or grants. Selection is competitive and considers grades, test scores, financial need, leadership, activities and the Luckyday essay. Seventy-five freshmen are chosen each year.
• How to Apply: Submit the application for admission and complete the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application and the FAFSA.
• Deadline: January 15 priority date for submitting the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application and deadline of March 1 for filing the FAFSA.

Lott Leadership Scholarship (up to 5)

• Award Amount: Varies
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen with exceptional leadership and academic records who are actively pursuing a degree in public policy leadership.
• How to Apply: Apply to the Trent Lott Leadership Institute via the Special Programs & Scholarships Application.
• Deadline: January 15.

Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors Scholarship (21 from various funding sources)

• Award Amount: $32,000 ($8,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen selected to the Honors College; selection is competitive.
• How to Apply: Apply to the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College via the Special Programs & Scholarships Application.
• Deadline: January 15.

Croft Institute for International Studies Scholarship (10)

• Award Amount: $32,000 ($8,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen with strong academic and leadership records who demonstrate an interest in international studies and who are actively pursuing a degree in international studies.
• How to Apply: Apply to the Croft Institute via the Special Programs & Scholarships Application.
• Deadline: January 15.

Christine and Clarence Day Business Scholarship (1)

• Award Amount: $40,000 ($10,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are Mississippi high school graduates pursuing business degrees. Outstanding academic and leadership records required.

• Deadline: January 15.

Gatlin Family Scholarship

• Award Amount: $12,000 ($3,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen from North Mississippi or the Memphis area pursuing business degrees. Outstanding academic and leadership records required.

• Deadline: January 15.

School of Accountancy Scholarships

• Award Amount: $12,000 ($3,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen and transfer students who are actively pursuing degrees in accountancy. Strong academic and leadership records considered.

• Deadline: March 1.

School of Engineering Scholarships

• Award Amount: $4,000-$24,000 ($1,000-$6,000 per year).

• Eligibility: Entering freshmen and transfer students who are actively pursuing degrees in engineering, including computer science.

• Award Amount: $4,000 ($1,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen from Mississippi who have been selected as one of the top 20 All-Star Scholars by the Mississippi Economic Council.
• How to Apply: Students must provide documentation of status to the Office of Financial Aid. Students must be admitted to the university.
• Deadline: Confirmation must be received within the first term of enrollment.

Student Body President Scholarship

• Award Amount: $4,000 ($1,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who served in the top elected position in their high schools as the president of the entire student body/student council. (Class presidents and executive board members do not qualify.)
• How to Apply: Students must provide documentation of status to the Office of Financial Aid and must be admitted to the university.
• Deadline: Confirmation must be received within the first term of enrollment.

Eagle Scout/Gold Award

• Award Amount: $4,000 ($1,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who have achieved the levels of Eagle Scout or Gold Award.
• How to Apply: Students must provide documentation of status to the Office of Financial Aid and must be admitted to the University.
• Deadline: Confirmation must be received within the first term of enrollment.

Boys State/Girls State Scholarship

• Award Amount: $4,000 ($1,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are named as governor to their state OR the state delegate to Boys Nation/Girls Nation.
• How to Apply: Students must provide documentation of status to the Office of Financial Aid and must be admitted to the University.
• Deadline: Confirmation must be received within the first term of enrollment.

National Hispanic Recognition Award

• Award Amount: $8,000 ($2,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen named to the College Board's National Hispanic Recognition Program after taking the PSAT/NMSQT. This award can be stacked with Academic Excellence unless a student is designated a National Merit Semifinalist or Finalist, in which case the upgraded Finalist/Semifinalist packages would apply.
• How to Apply: Students must provide documentation of status to the Office of Financial Aid. Students must be admitted to the University.
• Deadline: Confirmation must be received within the first term of enrollment.

Nonresident Alumni Scholarship

• Award Amount: $12,000 ($3,000 per year, per alumnus parent, toward the out-of-state fee for new students entering in 2012-13).
• Eligibility: Nonresident students whose parent(s) received a degree from the University.
• How to Apply: Students must be admitted to the University and complete the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application. (After March 1, a separate application can be found at www.olemiss.edu/finaid.)

High School Valedictorian/Salutatorian Scholarships

• Award Amount: $4,000 ($1,000 per year).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are named valedictorians or salutatorians.
• How to Apply: Submit a letter from principal or counselor to the Office of Financial Aid confirming status as one of the top two students in the school. Students must be admitted to the university.
• Deadline: Confirmation must be received within the first term of enrollment.

Chancellor's Leadership Class

• Award Amount: $1,000 (first year only).
• Eligibility: Entering freshmen demonstrating strong leadership; must be nominated by school official AND selected by University committee.
• How to Apply: School officials will be contacted to nominate students. Students also must be admitted to the university and complete the Scholarship tab within the Special Programs & Scholarships Application.
• Deadline: March 1.

GRANTS

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

When completing the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov, remember to

• List the University of Mississippi's federal school code: 002440;
• You (and your parent, if applicable) will electronically sign your application. If you do not want to sign electronically, you may print, sign and mail the signature page to the address provided.
• Print your confirmation page for your records. If you do not receive a SAR (Student Aid Report) within approximately two weeks, call 800-433-3243 or check online at www.fafsa.gov.
• Parents and students are strongly encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval tool when completing the FAFSA.

Checklist of items needed to file the FAFSA

• Copy of your and your parents' federal tax returns (2012 returns for the fall 2013 term)
• Your driver's license and Social Security numbers
• Your W-2 forms and other records of money earned
• Records of untaxed income such as clergy allowances and child support
• Current bank statements
• Business and farm records
• Stock, bond and other investment records
• Your alien registration card (if you are not a U.S. citizen)

Submit the FAFSA by March 1 for priority consideration. Ensure that the FAFSA is complete by March 15 (received by the university and verified if necessary). If a FAFSA is selected for verification by the federal processor, the student must provide specific documents

including a copy of the parents' and student's IRS federal transcript and W-2 forms to the Office of Financial Aid. The Office of Financial Aid will confirm that the information submitted on the FAFSA is correct. Students will not be awarded or considered for any needbased scholarships until verification is complete. Verification typically takes two to three weeks.

Federal Grants

By completing the FAFSA, you are applying for all federal aid. The results of the FAFSA also are used to determine eligibility for other need-based aid programs.

Pell Grant

• Grant available to any student working on his or her first undergraduate degree.
• The Financial Aid Administrator determines the actual award amount based on cost of attendance (COA), enrollment status and expected family contribution (EFC).
• The maximum award for 2012-13 is $5,550. Students may receive this grant for no more than the equivalent of six years of full-time enrollment.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

• Grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need (students with the lowest EFCs).
• Priority is given to Pell Grant recipients.
• Grant amount varies; it is typically no more than $500 per year.

Grants for Mississippians

By completing the Mississippi Student Financial Aid Scholarship application, you are ensuring that, if qualified, you will receive financial support from state sources as you begin or continue your postsecondary education.

The Mississippi Resident Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG)—deadline September 15, 2013—is available to a student who

• Is a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior
• Has been a MS resident for one year prior to application deadline
• Enrolls full time
• Attends an eligible Mississippi college or university
• Has a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and 15 ACT or 720 SAT resulting from the national testing

Grant amount: up to $500/year for freshmen and sophomores and up to $1,000/year for juniors and seniors.

The Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG)—deadline September 15, 2013—is available to a student who:

• Has been a Mississippi resident for one year prior to high school or home school completion
• Has a 3.5 GPA after a minimum of seven semesters in high school
• Has a 29 ACT or 1280 SAT score or is a National Merit/National Achievement Scholar
• Enrolls full time at an eligible Mississippi college or university

Grant amount: up to $2,500/year for a maximum of eight regular semesters.

The Higher Education Legislative Plan (HELP)—deadline March 31, 2013—is available to a student who

• Applies within one year of high school graduation
• Has been a Mississippi resident for two years prior to application deadlines
• Demonstrates need as determined by the results of the FAFSA
• Enrolls full time at a Mississippi college or university
• Documents an average family adjusted gross income (AGI) of $36,500 or less over the prior two years (AGI increases by $5,000 for each sibling under the age of 21 other than the student)
• Has a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a 20 ACT score
• Meets a specific high school core curriculum

HELP covers tuition and degree requirements for no more than 10 regular semesters.

The Sumners Grant is available to a student who

• Is a resident for at least 12 continuous months of Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Montgomery or Webster counties in Mississippi (residency verified by the Sumners Foundation)
• Is enrolled in a degree program at the university

Grant amount: up to $5,000 per year.

The Ole Miss Opportunity Program is provided to a student who

• Is a Mississippi resident
• Is an entering freshman at the start of the fall 2013 semester, seeking a degree and enrolled full time
• Has a family adjusted gross income on the 2012 federal tax return that is at or below $30,000
• Qualifies for a federal Pell Grant as determined by the results of the FAFSA (must file by March 1 with a complete FAFSA on file by March 15 for automatic consideration)

• Has a 3.0 high school GPA

This program provides a guarantee that award recipients will have a grant/scholarship package from all sources worth the equivalent of (1) base undergraduate tuition, (2) standard residence hall housing at the double occupancy rate, and (3) the Rebel All Access Plus 1 Meal Plan plus $400 FLEX for the year. The capped amount for 2012-13 was $13,532. This level of funding is contingent upon the student living on campus. Ole Miss Opportunity funding is used to fill the gap after all federal, state, institutional and private scholarships and grants have been awarded. (This amount may change if the student's financial need changes and/or if the student receives additional gift aid.)

Loans/Work Study

Federal Subsidized Direct Loan

Loans through the commercial lending institutions are available to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. Borrowing limits vary according to classification and dependency status. Repayment begins six months after the student leaves school. The federal government pays the interest for students while they are in school. The interest rate was fixed at 3.4 percent for 2012-13 but is expected to change in 2013-14.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan

Loans through thecommercial lending institutions are available to students without regard to financial need. Borrowing limits vary according to classification and dependency status. Annual eligibility is limited to the cost of attendance minus other financial aid the student receives. Repayment begins six months after the student leaves school; however, the student is responsible for the interest charges that begin to accrue immediately. The interest rate is fixed at 6.8 percent.

Federal Direct Parent Loan (PLUS)

Parent loans enable parents with good credit histories to borrow to pay the education expenses of their dependent undergraduate children. Annual eligibility is limited to the cost of attendance minus other financial aid the student receives. Financial need is not a requirement for this program. Repayment and accrual of interest begins immediately. Parents apply via the Ole Miss website: www.olemiss.edu/finaid. Students must file a FAFSA to establish eligibility for the loan. The interest rate is fixed at 7.9 percent.

Federal Perkins Loan

Long-term, low-interest loans of up to $5,500 per year are available to undergraduates who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Because funds are limited, award amounts usually do not exceed $2,000 per year. The interest rate is fixed at 5.0 percent. Interest does not accrue until repayment begins.

Health Professions Student Loan

Loans of up to the cost of attendance are available to eligible pharmacy students who demonstrate financial need. The interest rate is fixed at 5.0 percent. Interest does not accrue until repayment begins.

Private Loan

Private loans are available to students who are ineligible for federal student loans or who need more loan funds than the federal programs can supply. Being approved for a private loan depends largely on the credit score of the borrower (and co-signer, if applicable). Private loan products vary significantly, and students should consider the terms and conditions carefully when selecting a private-loan program. Employment

Federal Work Study

Part-time employment of 10-15 hours per week is available to students who demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA. Jobs are available in campus departments and at approved off-campus sites. Students are paid bi-monthly. A primary emphasis of this program is the Family Literacy Project, which involves placement of Federal Work-Study students in local public schools as reading or math tutors.

Student Employment

Part-time jobs on campus other than those through the work-study program are coordinated through the Student Employment Office. Financial need is not required for these employment opportunities.

Job Location and Development Program

Administered by the Career Center, the Job Location and Development Program assists University of Mississippi students in finding jobs in the local community. Students do not have to show financial need to participate in this program.

January 1—First date to complete the 2013-14 FAFSA and the MTAG/MESG application with the state of Mississippi.
January 15—Application deadline for admissions and scholarships for the Croft Institute, Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, Ole Miss Women's Council and the Lott Leadership Institute, as well as Newman and Carrier scholarships.
January 15—Final deadline for the Day and/or Gatlin School of Business scholarships.
January 15—Priority deadline to apply for Luckyday Success scholarships.

March 2013

March 1—Deadline to submit the Scholarship tab on the Special Programs & Scholarships Application.
March 1—Register online for orientation.
March 1—Priority date for submission of the FAFSA. Deadline to submit the FAFSA for Luckyday Success and Ole Miss Opportunity scholarship consideration.
March 15—Priority deadline for a completed FAFSA application. (The FAFSA has been filed and received by our Office of Financial Aid and verified, if necessary.)

March 31—Deadline to submit William Winter Teacher applications, Critical Needs Teacher applications and HELP applications.
