History

Chartered by the Mississippi Legislature in 1844, the University of Mississippi opened its doors to 80 students in 1848. The university is also affectionately known as Ole Miss. Established as a liberal arts institution, Ole Miss offers degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts, School of Accountancy, School of Applied Sciences, School of

Business Administration, School of Education, School of Engineering, Graduate School, School of Journalism and New Media, School of Law and School of Pharmacy. The university also operates campuses at the DeSoto Center in Southaven, the Advanced Education Center in Tupelo, the Booneville Center on the Northeast Mississippi Community College campus, the Grenada Regional Center and the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

The Campus

Although the main UM campus comprises 640 acres, the layout of the academic buildings is compact, allowing students plenty of time to get from one building to another between classes. More than $250 million in public and private funds have been spent over the last 10 years to renovate or construct new facilities on the Ole Miss campus, including residence halls, the performing arts center, sports venues both large and small, and academic buildings.

Oxford

The city of Oxford, with a population of around 19,000, combines the safety, charm and friendliness of small-town life with urban amenities and excitement. USA Today named Oxford one of its "Top 6" college towns, and Turner South Television said attractions from the historic Courthouse Square to William Faulkner's Rowan Oak are part of what makes Oxford so distinctive. An independent bookstore The New Yorker magazine described as being as good as or better than any in New York City, a bounty of independently owned and nationally recognized eateries and fine-dining establishments, and dynamic visual and performing arts venues help give Oxford its urban personality. But if you want a jolt of city life, Oxford is just 75 miles away from Memphis, Tenn.

Applying for Admission

Transfer Admission Requirements

Transfer students may be admitted under one of the following conditions:

• Earn an associate's degree intended for transfer to a four-year school from an accredited community college with at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
• Have a 2.0 cumulative GPA on all transferable credit, and have successfully completed at least the following 30 semester hours

of college work with a 2.0 cumulative GPA at a regionally accredited school:

• 6 semester hours of English Composition
• 3 semester hours of College Algebra, Quantitative Reasoning or a higher level math
• 6 semester hours of Laboratory Science
• 9 semester hours of Humanities and Fine Arts
• 6 semester hours of Social or Behavioral Sciences
• Meet the freshman admissions requirements and have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA on transferable credit from a regionally accredited college or university.

Application Checklist and Deadlines

• Submit an online application by visiting www.olemiss.edu/admissions and clicking Apply Online. A $35 application fee for Mississippi residents or $50 application fee for nonresidents is required.
• Submit official transcripts from all colleges previously attended. If you are to be admitted under freshman admissions criteria, please submit an official high school transcript in addition to official transcripts from all colleges previously attended.
• If you are to be admitted under freshman admissions criteria, have official ACT/SAT scores sent electronically by the testing agency.

All applicants should submit required materials well in advance of the term for which they intend to enroll. Nonresidents of Mississippi applying for first-year admission for the summer or fall terms should submit all application materials no later than April 1. Applications received after April 1 will be evaluated on a competitive, space-available basis.

Readmission

Former University of Mississippi students who have had a break in enrollment of one or more semesters must apply for readmission. Official copies of transcripts are required from all colleges attended since the last UM enrollment. Students who were academically dismissed from the university may not be eligible for automatic readmission. Readmission will be to the school or department in which the student was enrolled when he or she last attended UM. Students wishing to change majors first must be admitted and then may meet with an adviser from the program in which they wish to enroll.

Immunization Requirement

All students born after Jan. 1, 1957 must submit proof of two immunizations for measles, mumps and rubella prior to registering for classes. Medical history forms are available online at the Student Health Services website: www.olemiss.edu/depts/stu_health.

Applying for Housing

Students must gain admission to the university before applying for housing. Admission for housing is offered throughout the year on a rolling basis (beginning in mid-September for summer or fall applicants). Students with at least 30 transferable hours may choose to live on or off campus. Housing applications are available online in MyOleMiss for admitted and enrolled students. All housing-related questions and concerns should be directed to the Department of Student Housing.

Orientation

All transfer students must attend an orientation session to prepare for enrollment at the university. At Ole Miss, orientation includes academic advising and registration for classes, so it's an essential part of starting your college career. Each admitted student will receive orientation registration information during the semester prior to his or her declared term of enrollment. Getting Involved

You can choose to get involved in one or more of the 275 student organizations on the Ole Miss campus. Religious, political, special-interest and professional organizations are great ways to meet students with shared interests and add experience to your resume. We even offer an organization just for community college transfers.

The Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Chapter-Gamma of Mississippi promotes the continuing connection among PTK members after they leave their community colleges and come to the Ole Miss campus. Involvement in the chapter provides students with a network for socializing, opportunities to recruit fellow PTK members, an outlet for community service and leadership, and encouragement to achieve academic excellence.

Lyceum Scholars Awards

• Award Amount: Full resident tuition per year for two years (fall and spring semesters)
• Eligibility: Transfer students with at least a 3.0 GPA and 48 transferable community college credit hours and an exemplary record of leadership and service (Students must be enrolling on the Oxford campus.)
• Selection: Based on a scholarship interview conducted at Community College Scholarship Day on April 13, 2013. Students must register for this program in advance.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships

• Award Amount: $6,000 ($3,000 per year for two years)
• Eligibility: Transfer students with a 3.5 GPA on at least 48 transferable community college credit hours and membership in Phi Theta Kappa. Members of the All Mississippi Team will receive an additional one-time-only $1,000 scholarship, and an additional $1,000 one-time-only scholarship will be awarded to those students who become members of the All American Team. Nonresidents will receive an additional $2,000 per year for two years towards the nonresident fee.
• How to Apply: No separate application required; PTK must be indicated on official transcript, or students may bring a copy of the PTK membership card to the Office of Financial Aid or fax a copy to 662-915-1164.

Community College Academic Excellence Scholarship

• Award Amount: $3,000 ($1,500 per year for two years)
• Eligibility: Awarded to community college transfer students with a 3.0 overall transfer GPA or higher and 48 transferable community college credit hours. Students must be enrolled full-time to receive this award.
• How to Apply: Students must complete The University of Mississippi admissions application. No additional application is required.

Luckyday University Scholarships

• Award Amount: $9,200 (up to $4,600 per year)
• Eligibility: Awarded to a select group of 25 community college transfer students with a 2.5 overall GPA on at least 48 transferable community college credit hours. Students receiving this award must be Mississippi residents and must be transferring from a Mississippi community college. In addition, students selected must have remaining financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after other scholarships and grants have been awarded.
• How to Apply: To be considered for this scholarship, transfer students must file the FAFSA by March 1 and should complete the Luckyday University Scholarship Application. Students should also attend Community College Scholarship Day on April 13, 2013.
