Research:
Heath is currently working on phytoplankton dynamics in the Lower Mississippi River. His research seeks to answer questions in three major categories.

First: Phytoplankton Production.

  • How does production vary seasonally and at two spatially distinct parts of the Mississippi River?
  • What is the phytoplankton contribution to gross and net primary production?
Second: Community composition.
  • How does the phytoplankton community change over time?
  • Is community composition consistent throughout the lower Mississippi River?
Third: Limitation.
  • How do physical (discharge and light) and chemical (nitrogen, phosphorus, and silica concentrations) parameters impact the phytoplankton?
