A Message from the Graduate Student Council

2013 Graduate Council

Greetings.  My name is Tristen Jackson and I am the current President of the Graduate Student Council (GSC), the governing body for all graduate and professional students at the University of Mississippi.  As we are relatively still in our infancy as a governing body and many of you may have never heard of us, let me take a few moments to tell you about the GSC.

As a governing body, we are constantly seeking new ways to work with the administration in providing a superior experience to students who attend the University.  The University is in the process of considering a Parental Leave policy for graduate students, a policy first envisioned by members of the GSC Senate.  Furthermore, we are currently working with the Vice-Chancellor's office to ensure that our students are accounted for in plans for the new Student Union.  Besides being an advocate, we work to provide unique opportunities for students to flourish in their respective degree programs.  These opportunities include free copying services for our students in the J.D. Williams Library, guest speakers and workshops that are designed to develop professional skills, a research day that allows students to present their work to members of the University, research grants for students to conduct and present their work, and much more.  We also work to foster a sense of community by sponsoring several social and philanthropic events throughout the year, including our annual "Rock the Bus" campaign co-sponsored with the UM Alumni Foundation at the Grove Bowl each Spring.

Regardless of whether you were able to benefit from the GSC during your time at the University of Mississippi, we hope that you will continue to be an active part of our Ole Miss community.  The GSC will be hosting a tent for graduate and professional students this year for select football games, and I would like to extend an open invitation for you to join us.  Details will be made available through our website at gsc.olemiss.edu.  Also, if you care to help support our mission of providing the best experience possible for our students, please feel free to email me at any time.  We appreciate your dedication to the Graduate School and Ole Miss community.

Hotty Toddy,

Tristen Jackson
