Prospective
Students
If you are looking for a program where faculty take time to work with students
one on one, then The University of Mississippi is a good choice. The opportunity
to work closely with faculty is a crucial factor in achieving success in graduate
school. At Ole Miss you will be a member of a select group of students interacting
with faculty who have the time and willingness to give you individual attention.
Our program enrolls on average 25 students (MS and PhD); 17 professors comprise
the graduate faculty. Over our 40 year history, we have established a proven
record of providing students with an education that prepares them for jobs
in business and academia, in this country and across the globe. Since 2005,
twenty four students graduated with PhD’s, and all
of them obtained jobs ranging from research universities to government and
industry
positions. The program has recently gained national attention for its support
of minority students.
The research of our faculty lies in four main areas: Algebra
and Number Theory,
Analysis,
Combinatorics,
and Statistics.
Graduate students are supported with assistantships which may be supplemented
by honors and minority fellowships. Assistantships provide tuition. Summer
support is also available through the Summer Graduate Research Assistantship
Program. In addition, the Department has had, in last 7 years, a federally
funded Graduate Assistantship in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program. The
GAANN program provides fellowships for students who can demonstrate excellent
academic records, financial need, and who plan to pursue a PhD in mathematics.
For more information or to arrange a visit, please contact Dr. B. Wei at bwei@olemiss.edu .
