Three
students defended their PhD dissertations in 2010. (August 21,

The Twenty-third Cumberland
Conference on Combinatorics, Graph Theory, and Computing
was held
at The University of Mississippi May 20-22, 2010.
The University of Mississippi math team tied
for the first place in the 2010 student mathematics
competition held by the LA/MS section of the Mathematics Association
of America.
Professor James G.
Oxley of Louisiana State University gave the Dalrymple Lecture
on May 21, 2010. (abstract).
Drs Buskes and Cole obtain over half-million GAANN
Grant for the third time.
The Department of Mathematics
has been honored for outstanding efforts by the American
Mathematical Society.
Fall 2009
Professor
Michal Karonski of Emory University gave the Dalrymple Lecture
on Thursday, November 19 at 6 pm in Lewis Hall 101. The title
of the lecture is "Random Graphs: From Paul Erdos to the

Dr. Nathan Jones joins the faculty as an assistant professor
in Fall 2009. Dr. Jones, who obtained his Ph.D. degree from
UCLA in 2005, works on Number Theory.
The Twenty-third Cumberland Conference on Combinatorics,
Graph Theory, and Computing will be held at the University of
Mississippi in May 2010. Professor Talmage James Reid will be
the main organizer.
2008-2009
Four students defended their PhD dissertations,
two defended their MS theses, and two more defended their senior
theses in Spring of 2009.
Professor Andrew Odlyzko of the University of Minnesota gave
the 2009 Dalrymple Lecture on Thursday, April 2 (abstract).
Our
graduate student Sam Watson has been awarded the Gates Cambridge
Scholarship.
Ole Miss Undergraduate Mathematics Team (Cameron Byrum, Catherine
Putnam, George Rochardson, and Matt Stephenson) ranked 3rd at
the 2009 LA/MS MAA meeting mathematics competition.
Catherine Putnam won the 2nd prize on the undergraduate paper
competition at the 2009 LA/MS MAA meeting.
Three new faculty Micah
B. Milinovich, Erwin Miña-Díaz,
and Sandra Spiroff joined the Department
in 2008.
Dang obtained an NSF REU grant (DMS-0809018-supplemental project
of her NSF grant DMS-0707074 as a Co-PI with H. Peng).
