CFL Swap, A Big Success!
The University of Mississippi Power Save Campus team geared up the start of a new semester with a compact fluorescent light bulb swap at the Residential College. Residents came to swap their incandescent bulbs for new, energy efficient CFL bulbs and had their names entered into a raffle to win one of three gift cards to Ya Ya's Frozen Yogurt.
"Over a period of three afternoons, we received over 100 incandescent bulbs."
The 119 incandescent bulbs we collected were consuming 10,353 kilowatt-hours per year based on the usage information students gave us, which would cost approximately $831.39 per year. Now that we have replaced those bulbs with more energy efficient CFLs, those lamps are only consuming 2,707 kilowatts per year, which saves approximately $613.99 annually. These new bulbs reduce energy consumption in these same lamps by 74%!
