Philanthropy
Phi Mu participates actively in our own philanthropy, as well as
supporting other Greek organizations in their philanthropic
endeavors. This year, Phi Mu nationally started the Heart and Hand
fund to help our sisters who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Some of our philanthropy events:
Fountain
Our Chapter of Phi Mu celebrated our 75 years of being at Ole Miss
by giving a centerpiece for the new quadrangle at the University of
Mississippi, between the J.D. Williams Library and Paris-Yates
Chapel. At the center of the quadrangle, is what we like to call the
"Phi Mu Fountain". Not only was the fountain donated by the alumnae
and friends of Phi Mu’s Alpha Delta chapter, but an endowment fund
for its maintenance was also established. The fountain will show Phi
Mu's love for the University of Mississippi for many years to come.
Relay For Life
When the ladies of Phi Mu are not raising money for the Children’s
Miracle Network, they enjoy getting involved on campus and helping
other organizations raise money; money that is destined to help
improve the overall quality of life for others. In April of 2004 Phi
Mu participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life
fundraiser held on the Ole Miss campus. Phi Mus walked around the
Ole Miss Circle from 6 o’clock in the evening to 6 o’clock in the
morning. Our theme was “We’re not taking Cancer LION down”, and we
did not; Donations were pledged by family and friends and Phi Mu was
proud to donate over 4,000 dollars to the American Cancer Society.
This was the most donated by any collegiate group participating.
Alpha Tau Omega/Phi Mu Homeless Awareness
Each year we partner with ATO to raise money for local charities and
spend 48 hours living as though we are “homeless,” collecting money
from passerby. This not only raises money for us to donate to
charitable organizations in need, it also helps make Ole Miss
students aware of homelessness.
Phi Mu Cares for Kids
In 1986, Phi Mu Fraternity adopted Children’s Miracle Network
Champions as its second national philanthropy. CMN’s annual
telethon, dubbed the “telethon with a difference,” has only one
goal; to improve the quality of life for children. Founded by the
Osmond Foundation, a nonprofit organization, the telethon represents
more than 160 specialized hospitals for children.

CMN is like no other national telethon in that 100 percent of the
money raised in a given area goes directly to the children’s
hospital in that area. Alpha Delta’s chosen hospital is LeBonheur
Children’s Hospital of Memphis, Tennessee. Therefore, when we
conduct fundraisers for CMN, the money is first forwarded to Phi Mu
Foundation, which in turn sends the money to LeBonheur. Nationally,
Phi Mu has raised more than 3 million dollars for 700 children’s
hospitals in North America. Our chapter of Phi Mu works especially
hard to raise money for this philanthropy that means so much to us.
We are in the top five fundraising chapters nationwide, raising more
than $30,000 last year.
Volunteerism is the key to success for CMN. Thousands of Phi Mu
members volunteer their time to help with CMN hospital fund-raising
events. Each year, especially during the holidays, they visit the
children to read books, take gifts, or provide entertainment. Phi Mu
volunteers also spend time taking pledges during the telethon, as
well as being involved locally with the planning and telethon
production. Collegiate and alumnae chapters hold a variety of
fund-raising events such as rock-a-thons, sports tournaments, art or
horse shows, dance marathons, and many more events that benefit
local children’s hospitals.
In 1998, the Children’s Miracle Network became Phi Mu Fraternity’s
primary national philanthropy. Phi Mu is proud to support CMN and
LeBonheur, and we continue to strive to do all we can for this
wonderful organization and improving the quality of life for
children.
How does Alpha Delta raise money for The Children’s Miracle Network
and LeBonheur Children’s hospital?
The Greek Directory
At the beginning of each semester at The University of Mississippi,
Alpha Delta publishes their annual Greek Directory. This Directory
lists every Sorority and Fraternity on the Ole Miss campus and its
individual members. The telephone numbers and email addresses of
each Greek member are also listed. In addition to accessing any
Greek member on campus, the directory also provides information on
Oxford restaurants and businesses, Ole Miss events, and the many
study abroad programs. So whether someone is looking for a number of
the girl sitting next to them in class, a tanning bed, dry cleaning
facility, late night pizza, or the Ole Miss intramural sports
calendar, Phi Mu’s Greek Directory can help. Last year, the Alpha
Delta Chapter of Phi Mu raised $10,000 dollars on the sales of the
Greek Directory. The proceeds were given to LeBonheur Children’s
Hospital in Memphis.
National Philanthropy Day
The third Monday of October each year, Phi Mu collegiate and alumni
chapters across the nation participate in community service projects
together. This year we made Halloween cards for the children at
LeBonheur and collected school supplies to help with Hurricane
Katrina relief efforts.
Mr. Valentine
This event is always fun. Each Greek organization as well as other
campus organizations are given the opportunity to sponsor a
“charming” male student for this pageant. This year will be our
second one, and last year was an overwhelming success. The boys have
an opportunity to show off their personality on stage and to answer
an interview question, and then the winner is chosen! 100% of the
proceeds benefit the Children’s Miracle Network.
