Dr. Gary R. Gaston is a Professor of Biology. He received his Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary in 1983. Following a position as an Associate Marine Scientist at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Dr. Gaston spent nine years teaching and conducting research at McNeese State University. He joined the Biology Department at the University of Mississippi as an Associate Professor during 1990, and was promoted to Professor in 1996. Dr. Gaston has published over 50 research papers and book chapters on ecology of marine benthos (ocean-floor organisms), ecology of birds (especially waterfowl and wading birds), coral-reef habitats, and effects of pollution on marine organisms. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation, US Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, NASA, NOAA, and other sources. Dr. Gaston teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in ecological topics, and regularly leads students in Study Abroad programs (Belize, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Australia). Dr. Gaston received the Ole Miss Faculty Achievement Award for outstanding teaching and scholarship during 2007, and the Cora Lee Graham Award for outstanding teaching of freshmen during 2002.
