Brief Bio
Debby A. Chessin, Ed.D. is an Associate Professor of Teacher Education. Dr. Chessin received his B.S. in Agronomy and Life Sciences from Cornell University in Ithaca New York in 1971. Following two years of employment as a Research Technician in the Department of Plant Biochemistry at Cornell University, she was awarded a Graduate Fellowship at Cornell to complete her M.S. in Postharvest Physiology and Food Microbiology. After moving with her husband, Seth Dabney to Baton Rouge Louisiana, she worked as a substitute teacher in the public schools and completed education classes in the evening. After moving to Oxford, Mississippi, took additional classes in education and worked for three years as a sixth grade Math and Science teacher. She was awarded a graduate assistship at The University of Mississippi in the Department of Education, with a focus on science education. She was fortunate to work with Dr. Jean M. Shaw who served as a mentor through out her positions as graduate assistant, graduate instructor, visiting Assistant Professor and during the first few years as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. She was promoted to Associate Professor and awarded tenure in 2005. Dr. Chessin published numerous article in peer-reviewed journals published by the National Science Teachers' Association, the National Council of Mathematics and others. She is a co-author of several books and book chapters and has presented as conferences nationally. Dr. Chessin teachers undergraduate and graduate classes in Teacher Education, works with student teachers in local schools and is very active in the National Science Teachers' Association and serves as a Science Program Reviewer for NCATE. She served as Principal Investigator for Service Learning grant from Learn and Serve and a PT3 grant from the USDE, both for three years, Currently, she serves as the Coordinator of Study Abroad and Service Learning in Teacher Education. She received the school's Research Award in 2004.
