Brief Bio
Michael F. Metcalf is Associate Provost for International Affairs and Professor of History. Metcalf earned his A.B. at Harvard in 1966 and his M.A. and Fil.dr. degrees at Stockholms universitet in 1972 and 1977. An expert on eighteenth-century Swedish parliamentary and party political history, Metcalf joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1977, progressing through the ranks from assistant to associate and then to full professor of history. In addition he served as the director at various times of three international studies centers and ultimately as Assistant Vice President for International Education from 1992 to 1998. Metcalf joined the faculty of The University of Mississippi in 1998 when he became the first executive director of the Croft Institute for International Studies, which he headed until becoming associate provost in July 2007. In addition to his broad expertise in early modern Scandinavian history, he has devoted much time over the last twenty years promoting the study of foreign languages to achieve high levels of proficiency, most recently in connection with the Chinese Language Flagship here at the University.
