JADE: Judicial Alcohol and Drug Education

BASICS and JADE, while they have two different names are essentially the same experience.  Both education/intervention programs are built on the tenants of motivational interviewing and brief interventions.  BASICS is the title of the program for Ole Miss students referred by Oxford City Court to complete as part of either pleading or being found guilty for Minor in Possession (MIP), Public Drunk, or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charges.  JADE, on the other hand, is the title of the program for students sanctioned on campus for Possession of Alcohol, Visibly Overcome, DUI, or marijuana/paraphernalia charges.

BASICS and JADE are set up and operate in the exact same way.  The programs allow students the opportunity to assess their own risk, identify potential changes, and help reduce the risk of having future problems or charges relating to alcohol/drug use.  The programs are designed to help students in examining their own behavior in a judgment-free environment.  The educators in the Office of Health Promotion can provide feedback and guidance, but in the end, it’s entirely up to the student as to whether or not he or she wishes to continue making change.  The session notes and paperwork relating to BASICS or JADE is confidential and no personal information will be disclosed to anyone, including parents, without the student’s permission.

2. What is the cancellation or noncompliant policy?
In the event that you will not be able to keep your appointment, you must notify the Office of Health Promotion (662-915-6543) prior to your scheduled appointment time. Failure to do so will result in a missed appointment fee charged to your Bursar account. See the no-show fee schedule under #4.

3. How much do the programs cost?
The fee for BASICS is $200.  In some instances, students may have their City of Oxford court fines reduced by $200 in order to help cover the cost – in those cases; the program is essentially “free” for the student, since they would have paid that money in court fines anyway.  Students in BASICS have the ability to choose how to pay: Visa/MC, cash, or Bursar.

The fee for JADE is $100 and is charged directly to the student’s Bursar Account. 

4. What is the schedule for no-show fees?
We are always happy to help students work around class/work schedules to make it to their appointments.  However, we do not have the free time for students who do not come to their appointments without calling to cancel – we call this a “no-show.”  No-show fees are charged for both BASICS and JADE directly to the student’s Bursar Account as follows:

  • 1st no-show: $25
  • 2nd no-show: $50
  • 3rd no-show: $75
  • 4th no-show: $100 – at this point you are considered non-compliant and either turned back over to court or the Dean of Students Conduct Office.

5. How do I schedule (or reschedule) an appointment?
There is no penalty for needing to reschedule an appointment for BASICS or JADE.  All we ask you to do is call the office and let us know you will be unable to make your appointment time.  If we do not happen to answer, PLEASE leave a message and we will call you back to reschedule.  No need to worry about no-show fees if you call first!  Phone number for appointments: (662) 915-6543.

6. Are you going to tell me not to drink?
BASICS and JADE are not “Just Say No” or abstinence-only programs.  They are also not the same thing as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). (However, there is a local Young People's AA meeting that meets on campus.)  While we will address and help you understand relevant laws, like Zero Tolerance and the campus’s two-strike policy, the power to make your own decisions is in your hands.  Our goal is to give you the opportunity to challenge some of your thoughts and/or perceptions.

7. What happens in the meeting/education sessions?
  • The first session usually lasts about 20-30 minutes and we ask you to come in to fill out some basic paperwork with your contact information, our cancellation policy, and a few questionnaire or assessment tools.  At the end of this paperwork session, you will make your next appointment and if you haven’t already finished eCHUG, you’ll be reminded to do so before you come back next time.
  • The second session usually lasts about 45 minutes.  You will meet one-on-one with one of our BASICS/JADE graduate assistants.  The graduate assistant will have a conversation with you. Based on the information in the initial questionnaires and assessments, you will be provided with personalized feedback.  You may leave the session with some new goals, things to think about, strategies to avoid negative consequences, or a plan to address potential changes that could work to help you reduce your alcohol/drug use risk. 
  • In the third and last session, you will meet with one of the graduate assistants and about 8-10 other students in the BASICS or JADE programs for a group meeting.  This session is scheduled to last for about 90 minutes.  In the group, you will review the program as a whole and work together to address alcohol/marijuana use, campus/city/state/federal laws and policies, effects of mixing alcohol with other substances, blood alcohol concentration (BAC), and many other topics relating to college alcohol and drug use.  Most graduate assistants facilitate this session with the use of games and storytelling.  It’s not your average “alcohol class.”
