Tom Stoppard was
born Tomas Straussler in 1937 in Czechoslovakia.His Jewish parents escaped the Nazi
invasion with their two sons, but Stoppard’s grandparents and aunts died in
Nazi concentration camps.Upon their
escape, Stoppard’s family immigrated to Singapore, arriving just prior to the
Japanese invasion in which Stoppard’s father was killed.
