INST 203 FINAL EXAMINATION QUESTIONS

  1. Our Final Examination will ask you to write on four questions that we pick from the seven questions listed below. In each case you will be asked to provide specific historical evidence to back up your position.
    1. Do you think that Maoist China abandoned "Culturalism", while Postwar Japan abandoned "Nationalism"?
    2. Is "crossing the river by groping for stones" an accurate description of China's reforms since 1978? Why or why not?
    3. Why do you think that there are more and more Communist Party members in Chinese universities? What are the implications of that trend?
    4. What do you see as the strengths and weaknesses of the Mazda rescue plan?
    5. Suppose a Japanese university official told you that their admissions system is significantly better than an American university's "tilt" towards alumni, athletes and diversity. How would you respond?
    6. Are the barriers to sexual equality in Japan - here defined as the ability of women and men to break out of their ascribed roles - significantly different from those in the USA?
    7. How do you explain the fact that government policy can only marginally affect birth rates in both China and Japan?
