Abstract
Consists primarily of photographs and personal histories of several African American families from North Mississippi (specifically Lafayette Co. and Oxford). Alongside information about the lives and history of these families, this collection also contains information about the churches, businesses, and organizations that currently exist and have existed in the area.

Biographical Note

In 1993, Mrs. Susie Marshall received a Mississippi Humanities Council Grant for her coordinated project “Changes in the Senior Sewing and Savings Club, the Oxford Development Association, and the Mississippi Humanities Council, the project consisted of three public presentations held in the spring of 1996.

From this initial grant project, the idea to chronicle the history of the African American community developed. Participants were asked to write a short family narrative and give artifacts when possible. These materials form the nucleus of the collection.
