Chair Williamson called the meeting to order at 2:08 p.m. when it was determined that a quorum was present. Before opening discussion on the By-Laws amendment, he reported that Dr. Jean Shaw had asked him to let the group know that this year’s United Way Campaign was behind in its goal, and hoped that those who had not contributed yet would consider doing so.
The proposed amendment, drafted by Sen. T. J. Ray had been distributed to those present: "Be it resolved that the By-Laws of the University of Mississippi Senate of the Faculty be amended to change regular meetings from 2:00 p.m. on the second Friday of every month to 7:00 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month."
The adoption of the amendment was moved by Sen. Hanshaw, with a second by Sen. Klein. Sen. Taylor then proposed an amendment to the motion, seconded by Sen. Graves, that the time of the meeting on the second Thursday be in the late afternoon, 4:00 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. or 5:00 p.m., rather than 7:00 p.m.
In the ensuing discussion Sen. Jay Watson pointed out that either late afternoon or evening meetings presented difficulties to Senators with young children. Sen. Taylor remembered a time when childcare was provided.
It was generally agreed that no one time was ideal for everyone, and the issue would have to be settled by a majority vote.
Sen. Ethridge called for the question on Sen. Taylor’s alternate amendment. It failed with fifteen against, thirteen in favor, one abstention.
Then the question was called on the original amendment. It passed with seventeen in favor, ten opposed, two abstaining.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:05 p.m. The next meeting of the Senate will be on January 14, 1999, at 7:00 p.m.
Approved: January 14, 1999
