Brief Bio
Charles L. Hussey is Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education and Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He received the Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the University of Mississippi in 1974. Following graduation, he served four years of active military service in the United States Air Force where he was a research chemist at the Frank J. Seiler Research Laboratory and a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Biological Sciences at the United States Air Force Academy. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1994 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University in 1978 as an assistant professor. He was promoted to Professor in 1987 and served as Chair from 1997 until 2017. For the past 40 years he has carried out research on the electrochemistry and transport properties of ionic liquids and molten salts. He has authored/co- authored more than 175 refereed journal articles, book chapter, patents, and technical reports. Professor Hussey's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Alcoa, and the Department of Energy. He is a Technical Editor for the The Electrochemical Society Journals and was elected as a Fellow of The Electrochemical Society in 2003 and Emeritus Member in 2017. He received the University of Mississippi Faculty Achievement Award in 1996; the Southeastern Conference Faculty Achievement Award and R&D Top 100 Award in 2014; and the University of Mississippi Distinguished Research and Creative Achievement Award in 2015. In 2019 he was advanced to the rank of Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He is a member of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Golden Key Honor Society. Professor Hussey teaches courses in electrochemistry and analytical chemistry. He is a retired member of the United States Air Force Reserve, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
