Brief Bio

Dr. Cristiane Queiroz Surbeck, P.E., joined the Department of Civil Engineering in August 2007. She teaches and conducts research in the fields of environmental and water resources engineering. She obtained her B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Maryland. Following her BS, she worked in southern California and worked as a civil and environmental engineer for Geomatrix Consultants, Inc. (now Wood, LLC). There, she designed pilot and full-scale soil and groundwater remediation systems, provided construction oversight, and managed operations and maintenance activities at numerous remediation sites. She also worked on stormwater quality characterization and environmental due diligence. Her work took her to sites located throughout California and the United States, and also in Brazil and Mexico. She obtained her M.S. and Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of California, Irvine. Her Ph.D. research was on determining sources and characteristics of microbial and suspended particle pollution in rivers and streams. She was funded by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Graduate Fellowship. Her teaching experience includes Fluid Mechanics, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources, Environmental Remediation, and Service Learning in Water Treatment. She also has an interest in incorporating environmental sustainability in engineering projects. Another special interest is environmental and water projects in Latin America. Dr. Surbeck is a member of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), where she served as president from 2017 to 2018. She has received the School of Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award (2010), Junior Faculty Research Award (2014), and Faculty Service Award (2015).
