Brief Bio
Dr. Ellen Lackey is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. She has been involved with composite materials research for the past 30 years. She has conducted successful research projects related to mechanical and physical property characterization, optimization of manufacturing through the use of statistical experimental design techniques, microscopy, and development of composite manufacturing techniques. Many of these projects have related to the development of processing techniques for new constituent materials for pultruded composites. Dr. Lackey is also active in educational activities at the University of Mississippi. She teaches materials science, design, and CAD/CAM/CAE courses to both graduate and undergraduate students and has participated in course development activities such as revision of the materials science laboratory manual, development of new laboratory sessions, and the development of courses in failure analysis and mechanical characterization of composites. She received the 1999 Society of Automotive Engineers Ralph Teetor Award for Engineering Educators, the University of Mississippi (UM) ASME Student Section Outstanding Mechanical Engineering Teacher Award (1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2014 (award may only be received once in a 3 year period)), the University of Mississippi 1999 Faculty Achievement Award, the 2002 School of Engineering Outstanding Faculty Award, and the 2007 School of Engineering Teaching Award. In 2008, Dr. Lackey was selected as the NASA Space Grant Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) Summer Faculty Fellow at Kennedy Space Center, and in 2012, Dr. Lackey joined ten other industry professionals on the 2012 list of Bright, Energetic, Skilled Trailblazers (B.E.S.T.) in the composites industry as selected by the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA). In 2015, Dr. Lackey received the ASTM International Professor of the Year Award, and in 2017, Dr. Lackey received a national Award of Recognition from the ASTM D20 Committee.
