Biography

Stuart E. Schafer, J.D. earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in American History from Michigan State University (1974) and his Juris Doctorate from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School (1977). He is licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan, Michigan’s United States District Courts and the Federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Mr. Schafer’s practiced law for twenty-nine years before coming to the University of Mississippi in 2007. His practice included civil, domestic and criminal trial work and acting as a private or court appointed arbitrator, mediator or facilitator. He helped establish a civil mediation system in Wayne County, Michigan (Detroit) and lectured and counseled on trial preparation and alternative dispute resolution. He also served as an Auxiliary Public Safety Officer for six years in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan.

Mr. Schafer teaches undergraduate business law and helped to standardize the course. He also created a negotiation and dispute resolution course. He has also written a number of juried published articles on various subjects within his expertise. Mr. Schafer also served a term in the Faculty Senate.
