  • ABSTRACT

    Tamoxifen and Flow Cytometry

Tamoxifen is a drug treatment for breast cancer, just recently commercially available. It works by inhibiting estrogen receptors and nucleoside transporters on the cell membrane, which in turn decreases the stimulation of estrogen and nucleosides on the growth of the cancer cells. Scientists have been testing Tamoxifen by way of radioactive substances, but a new method has been developed called Flow Cytometry. The new method is a safer way of testing the characteristics of cells. In my experiment, a fellow student and I will be using this new experiment to test the mechanism of tamoxifen. We are hoping to prove this method is just as good, and will produce an accurate result.
