ABSTRACT
African Perceptions in The New York Times 1990-2000
| This research paper will analyze the coverage of Africa in The New
York Times from 1990-2000. It partially replicates Hassan El Zein
and Anne Cooper’s content analysis of The New York Times coverage of Africa
from 1976 to 1990 by investigating the non-crises/crisis and front-page
coverage of Africa using El Zein. This research will report how that
coverage of Africa has improved since the initial study. This research
will also briefly discuss how the emphasis of crises-oriented news of Africa
in the American mass media can possibly have an effect on America’s perception
of Africa.
