ABSTRACT

The Success of Reading Aloud to Young Children

The purpose of this paper is to examine the importance of reading aloud and what affects it has on a child’s academic, social, and cognitive success.  In this paper, I will provide support for the increased emphasis on reading instruction and enlighten others on the importance of reading aloud to young children.  Reading aloud is the tool that ignites a child’s love for reading and learning.  Topics to be discussed include looking at the importance of reading aloud to a child in the early years of life and the affect that it has on a child’s success.  The importance of parental involvement in reading aloud activities in the home environment, as well as the teachers’ role in the classroom will be addressed.

The research provided evidence that reading aloud to young children is vital to the success of a child.  It is very important that programs and information that explain the benefits of reading aloud be provided to parents and educators as well as information on the success of children who have been read to.  If more people understand the affects of reading aloud to young children, then maybe more children would be able to enjoy the experience and do better academically, cognitively, and socially.  Further research that targets the affects of reading aloud should be conducted and perhaps the affects of reading aloud on certain learning styles.
