ABSTRACT
Loneliness, Self-Esteem and Time Spent Alone: A Deeper Look at Loneliness and its Relationship to Self-Esteem
In this paper, we attempted to study and analyze relationships among loneliness, self-esteem, and time spent alone among college students, and, more specifically, to show that loneliness is related to self-esteem. By using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and an Activity Questionnaire on which students reported the amount of time they spent alone, we found that there were significant correlations among the three variables of interest. For the 58 students that completed these measures, we found that students who reported being lonely were significantly more likely to report having low self-esteem (r=.522). We also found that students who are lonely report spending significantly more time alone (r=.275). Also, students who spend more time alone tend to have lower self-esteem (r= .314). |
