ABSTRACT

Effective Methods for Video Delivery in Online Courses

As the uses for geospatial information technologies continue to expand, the need for a trained work force is growing as well.  To respond to this need, the Institute Advanced Education in Geospatial Sciences at the University of Mississippi is implementing an industry driven, teacher-created, education and training initiative that allows students to participate in online courses created by National and International leaders in the field.

Throughout the five year life of this program, the University of Mississippi will contract with educational and industry leaders in geospatial information technology to create the content for online courses that are then hosted and delivered from the University to students throughout the world.  A course catalog will be made available and the courses will be licensed to participating universities.  Individual students may also enroll in courses through the University of Mississippi and receive credit from that institution.  As a rule, credit will be offered through participating Universities.

The research being done this summer is in support of this project that involves online course development and delivery. My research paper was conducted to see which video format, CODEC, and video player would be the best for the IAEGS to use for its online courses.  This is to see how well a video will play using the different types of formats, CODECS, and video players.

To conduct this research, I would have to load a video on a computer.  By using video editor software, I will save the video under different file formats.  Then I would save those under the most commonly used CODECS.  From there, the video which are saved under different file formats and CODECS would then be played on different types of video players.  Then after that is done, I will measure how long it took to load, how many frames per second (fps) were used, and how clear the image showed.  By using a 3 x 3 image, I will see which one has all the best qualities to be used.
