ABSTRACT

Human Computer Interaction: Is the Use of Computer Animations an Effective Tool for Online Learning?

Human Computer Interaction (HCI), the interface between users (humans) and machines (computers), strives to make the data exchange between people and machines less stressful and easier to understand.  HCI research answers questions concerning how well computers are developed for successful interaction with humans.     This study investigates the use of animations and other media in online teaching and was conducted to learn more about the design and implementation of animations for instructional purposes.  Evidence was obtained for the comparison of the effectiveness of using animations and other multimedia in a lesson’s content.  The uses of animation in web-based learning were found to increase comprehension and material retention and were found to be beneficial in illustrating concepts that were difficult to understand or lengthy in discussion.    The use of multimedia in an online environment significantly clarifies the topic being taught and provides successful interaction between the computer and the user.
