ABSTRACT

Aspects of the Reproductive Ecology of the Bluntface Shiner, Cyprinella camura in a Channelized Creek and in an Unchannelized Creek in the Upper Coastal Plain of Northern Mississippi

A study of the Gonadal-Somatic Index of 85 female bluntface shiners, Cyprinella camura (Jordan and Meek), collected March 1993-1994, showed that the spawning period was May through July in two streams in Panola County, Mississippi.  The fish in the unchannelized stream had a higher GSI and two spawning peaks compared to the fish in the channelized stream that had a lower GSI and only one spawning peak.  It appears that channelization decreases the reproductive period and the energy available for female reproduction in the bluntface shiner.
