ABSTRACT

The Importance of Music Education to the Development of Critical Thinking Skills of Children - Ages Four to Eight.

This research will explore the connection between music and the brain, the importance of early introduction to music, and the results of studies involving music and academic achievement in order to shed light on a possible solution to poor test scores and academic achievement in schools today. The present research determined that music is important in the development of critical thinking skills in children ages four through eight; numerous studies show improved test scores and overall academic achievement for children who are taught music skills.  Using music as a learning tool also provides enrichment and fulfillment to the lives of children. The introduction of music to children at an early age is of prime importance because of brain development time lines.  A compilation of articles dealing with this topic and similar areas of study from peer edited journals and books will be utilized to determine the importance of Music Education in the maturation of Critical Thinking skills. The findings of this research will be significant to the education and music world as a whole because greater value will be placed on music as a learning tool. As a result, student achievement and overall productivity may increase.
