ABSTRACT

Cytomegalovirus Induced Birth Defect in Developed vs. Undeveloped Nations

Cytomegalovirus is a virus that causes birth defects.  It also causes major diseases in people with HIV/AIDS and people whom have had transplant surgery and transfusions. It can lead to death. It is a virus that is prevalent throughout the world and due to America’s socioeconomic status, the incidence of the cytomegalovirus infection occurs at a later age causing it to be more virulent to the American population. This research found that people in areas of higher socioeconomic are more susceptible to primary infection during pregnancy resulting in more cases of birth defects. Researching this virus will hopefully help more people become aware of CMV and its effects on everyday life. Also, hopefully this research will stimulate further research that will lead to a vaccine to prevent the effects of the virus as a whole.
