ABSTRACT

The Impact of Contemporary Urban Gospel Music on Congregational Involvement and on Black Churches in Selected American Metropolitan Areas Since 2000

Because gospel music is an interwoven part of the fabric of African American culture, and because its presentation and performance is undergoing a dynamic change, this research topic was selected to study the movement in contemporary Black church worship toward the inclusion of urban gospel music into the service. This study is designed to assist in determining the increase in involvement of urban gospel music that has taken place since the year 2000 within larger churches in selected major urban centers of the United States. A brief history of gospel music of the last one hundred years was included as a prelude to the major component of the study. A thirteen-question survey instrument was sent to the ministers of music from twenty-five large Black churches without regard for denomination located in large urban cities across America. Because the researcher is a student who is deeply involved in music of the church, the design and method provided by this study has proven to be a timely professional and personally rewarding project.
