Phytochemist receives prestigious UM research award

Mahmoud A. ElSohly shows the Commencement crowd of thousands the plaque he received designating him UM's 2013 Distinguished Research and Creative Achievement Award recipient.

Mahmoud A. ElSohly has a knack for formulating legal drugs and tests that reveal how potent illicit drugs are, whether they are contaminated, from where they might have come and whether someone is using them. His expertise and work have been sought by companies and nearly all our government’s agencies. These are some of the reasons he is the university’s 2013 Distinguished Research and Creative Achievement Award recipient.

UM honors Wilson for service to students

The Frist Student Service Award recognizes Ole Miss employees who go above and beyond the call of duty in their commitment to students. At commencement, Chancellor Dan Jones presented one of these coveted awards to Marvin C. Wilson, the pharmacy school’s associate dean for academic and student affairs, who has been involved in the education of thousands of pharmacy students.

This spring, pharmacy students selected five faculty members to honor for teaching excellence. They chose David J. McCaffrey III, Tracy A. Brooks and Laurie Warrington to receive Teacher of the Year awards, and selected Sharon R. Dickey and Richard “Buddy” Ogletree to receive Preceptor of the Year awards.

Pharmacognosist speaks to UN about marine research

Marc Slattery, director of the biotechnology division of the National Institute for Undersea Science and Technology at UM

The oceans are filled with plants and animals that promise to yield new drugs and other products that could improve quality of life, but studying these resources in foreign waters can be challenging. With the hope of shaping international policy regarding the sustainable use of marine resources, Marc Slattery talked about these issues May 2 on the world’s biggest stage: the United Nations’ Intersessional Workshop on Marine Genetic Resources.

Two Doctor of Pharmacy students, Miranda Jordan of Jackson and Laura Luther of Hattiesburg, were inducted into the School of Pharmacy Hall of Fame during spring commencement ceremonies. Both were selected by their classmates for their scholastic and professional contributions to the school.

Mickey C. Smith, F.A.P. Barnard Distinguished Professor Ermeritus of Pharmacy Administration

Mickey C. Smith, Barnard Distinguished Professor Emeritus, is one of the world’s most read and respected pharmaceutical marketing experts. Before retiring, Smith had published some 450 research and professional papers, written or edited 22 books and helped found the Journal of Pharmaceutical Marketing and Management. Since his retirement, Smith has published four more books. His latest is Hello. I’m Charlie Hartman.
