The University of Mississippi’s first-year professional pharmacy students received their white coats – that universal symbol of health care professionals – this month, marking their transition to the clinical portion of their program. Destined to become the pharmacy school’s Class of 2018, the students pledged to uphold their profession’s high standards of trust.

UM pharmacologist Tracy Brooks has been awarded a $334,000 grant from the Department of Defense’s competitive Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program to study a cancer gene called kRAS. Brooks is using the grant to figure out how to find or create new compounds to turn off the kRAS gene and selectively kill pancreatic, lung, colorectal and other cancers.

Pharmaceutics researchers S. Narasimha Murthy and Abhishek Juluri are exploring the use of cyclodextrin derivatives manufactured by Ligand Pharmaceuticals Inc. as a vehicle for delivering insoluble drugs through the skin. Their work could lead to topical formulations for achieving therapeutic doses of drugs to reduce pain, inflammation and cholesterol, or even inducing and maintaining anesthesia.

Louise Chadwick Lynch

After graduating from the UM School of Pharmacy, Louise Chadwick Lynch (BSPh 44) and her late husband, Harry Lynch (BSPh 41), took over her uncle’s drugstore in Waveland, Mississippi, which she eventually owned and operated for 49 years. She filled prescriptions at all hours and often eased the pain of her patients’ sea nettle bites, insect stings and skin rashes, becoming a Waveland icon.
