University of Mississippi (UM) School of Pharmacy students wrapped up a successful academic year by hosting a health fair for the Oxford community to raise money for the local chapter of the Interfaith Compassion Ministry (ICM).

Students were on hand to check participants’ glucose levels and blood pressure, provide counseling for smoking cessation, and present information on the Vial of Life program. The fair was free and open to the public; however, participants were asked to make a donation to ICM.

The Pharmacy Student Body began supporting the ICM last year as a philanthropic project.

“At the beginning of the school year, ICM sent a representative to speak to the executive council to inform us just how much last year’s donation affected the medically needy people of Lafayette County,” said Pharmacy Student Body President Matt Hill. “So the student body decided to host a health fair because we wanted to continue supporting ICM and use our newly acquired skills to directly serve the community in the process.”

Through donations from health fair participants, Fred’s Pharmacy, and the Pharmacy Student Body treasury fund, the student body was able to donate $1,500 to the ICM.

ICM is a nonprofit organization that provides financial and referral assistance to Lafayette County citizens. Besides providing monetary support, pharmacy students also volunteer their services during the year as student pharmacists to the organization.

In addition to supporting the ICM during the spring semester, the Pharmacy Student Body, spearheaded by the Student National Pharmaceutical Association, formed a team for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event. The team achieved its goal of raising $2,000 for the organization.
