Pullen Herbarium Specimen Database Search Form Helps and Hints |
The default value of every field is set as broadly as possible. Narrow your search by changing the value of any field.
A maximum of 250 records can be viewed per search. Values are not case sensitive. |
Taxonomic Fields
Scientific Name: Use this field to search by genus, or by genus and specific epithet. Entering "poa" will result in all the records for that genus. Entering "poa a" will result in all the Poa species that begin with "a". Using the currently accepted name in the Advanced Search will yield records filed under the currently accepted name and records filed under all its synonyms. Use the Synonym Search to find the most currently accepted name, according to the USDA Plants Database. |
Geographic Fields
State: Use the drop-down list to limit your search by state within the United States. County: Limit your state search by entering a county or parish name. Mississippi Natural Areas: Use the drop-down list to limit your search to parks, recreation areas, and natural areas in Mississippi (only). |
Collector
This field is designed to find a collector's last name, regardless of the number of collectors involved in a single specimen collection. For more complex collector searches, use our wildcard (%). |
Date Fields
The default values will search for all dates in a field. To narrow your search, select a range (a beginning and an ending value) for year, month, or day. To search for all specimens collected in 2001 and 2002, set the starting year to 2001, the ending year to 2002, and leave month and day set at their default values. To find everything collected in a single year set the starting and ending year to the same year and leave month and day set at their default values. Month and day searching follow the same rules. Null dates refer to those specimens that lack complete collection dates. For example, some of our oldest specimens have only the month and year, but no day indicated. |
Output Fields
Two fields are available to customize the results of your search. Sort Order: Six options are available from the drop-down list. Output Style: Two output styles are available from the drop-down list. Choose Simple Output to view a list of records, with scientific name, family, state, county, collection date, and accession number for each record. Choose Advanced Output to view complete records, including all the information in the Simple Output, as well as collector, locality, habitat, annotations, and comments. |
Password
It is not necessary to have a password to view most of our data. Locality and habitat data of listed rare plants, however, are not available without a password. If you are conducting research on any of these rare plants, contact the Curator to request a password. |
