Horsetail

Horsetail (Equisetum, also snake grass, puzzlegrass) is the only living genus in Equisetaceae, a family of vascular plants that reproduce by spores rather than seeds.

Water plants truly don't get any easier than horsetail. It's not surprising it's so tough; this plant has survived -- and thrived -- since prehistoric times. It offers spiky stems that look great along the margins of a pond, or potted and floating in the water. The segmented, dark green hollow stems, ringed in black, resemble a thin bamboo. Horsetail blooms branch out in a pluming spray from the stem tips. This plant can be invasive in damp places and should be confined to a container.
