Emeritus Associate Professor, Geology and Geological Engineering
Louis Zachos

Research Interests

Dr. Louis Zachos’s research interests include paleontology, biostratigraphy, diagenesis, and the study of fossil echinoids, with particular emphasis on Paleocene, Eocene, and Tertiary marine faunas of the Gulf Coast and eastern United States. His work also incorporates morphometric analysis, fossil preservation, and geologic interpretation of sedimentary deposits.

Biography

Dr. Louis G. Zachos is Associate Professor Emeritus of Geology and Geological Engineering at the University of Mississippi. His teaching and research focus on paleontology, geology, stratigraphy, biostratigraphy, diagenesis, and fossil preservation, with particular expertise in fossil echinoids, including sea urchins and sand dollars. His scholarship examines Paleocene, Eocene, and broader Tertiary marine fossil faunas, especially from the Gulf Coast and eastern United States. Dr. Zachos has published widely in paleontology and geology, contributing to the understanding of fossil echinoid diversity, preservation, and paleoenvironmental history.
