    Anna-Katherine McDonough is pursuing a B.S. in Special Education. She is currently president of the Kindness Club, where she inspires her peers to spread positivity and compassion throughout the campus community. She is an active member of Teachers of Tomorrow, Access for All, and Chi Omega Sorority.

Why did you choose to attend UM?

My decision to attend the University of Mississippi was deeply rooted in my love for Oxford's
small-town, beautiful, and welcoming atmosphere. Growing up in the small town of Natchez,
Mississippi, I envisioned continuing my education in a place that shared the same sense of community.
When I first set foot in Oxford during my freshman year of high school, I felt an instant connection.
What made this decision even more significant was the fact that numerous members of my family had
also chosen UM for their education, resulting in lasting memories, lifelong friendships, and invaluable
connections. UM felt like the right academic choice and a place where I could continue a family
tradition.

When and why did you choose your major?

I chose to major in Special Education due to my deep passion for making a positive impact on
children’s lives. I made this decision during the summer following my freshman year of college while
working at a summer camp. It was during that experience that I realized how fulfilling it was to be a
source of support and encouragement for those kids, and I knew I wanted to dedicate my career to
this path. My motivation is to create a classroom environment that is inclusive, where all students feel
not only welcomed but also loved and understood. My ultimate goal is to empathize with my
students, to walk in their shoes, and to provide unwavering support and assistance, regardless of the
challenges they may face.

What are your career goals?

After completing my bachelor’s degree in Special Education, I am determined to pursue a master’s
degree in Dyslexia Therapy. My passion is equipping students with the vital skill of reading, as I’ve seen many students face challenges in this area. My overarching goal is to ensure that no student is left behind in their educational journey. To achieve this, I want to deeply understand each student individually, tailoring my teaching to their specific learning needs. Through Dyslexia Therapy, I aim to provide personalized instruction, making a tangible difference in the lives of students, and empower them to become proficient readers.

Is there a professor who has been particularly impactful or helpful to you?

One professor who has had a profound impact on me is Dr. Sara Platt. Over the course of two years,
she has not only been my teacher but also the advisor for the Kindness Club. Working with her in the
Kindness Club has made me appreciate her genuine enthusiasm for promoting kindness, and she
wholeheartedly commits herself to everything she undertakes.


What sets Dr. Platt apart is her consistently positive outlook on every situation. Dr. Platt has equipped
me with valuable resources for my future. I have a vivid memory of her discussing the importance of
mental health for teachers and sharing a powerful quote: “Self-care is fundamentally about prioritizing
your health and happiness so that you flourish as a human being. The added bonus is that when you
do, your students get the best of you instead of what is left of you.”

Dr. Platt’s genuine desire for students' well-being and her unwavering support make her a constant source of helpfulness in students' academic journey. I deeply admire her caring, kind, and positive outlook, and I aspire to emulate these qualities in my own life.

What do you want to change about the world?

I aspire to change the world by reshaping society’s perception of people with disabilities. In my vision
for a more inclusive and compassionate world, individuals with disabilities are not defined by their
limitations but celebrated for their unique abilities and contributions. My active participation in both
the Kindness Club and Access for All has given me the opportunity to celebrate and highlight the
unique talents, perspectives, and experiences of individuals with disabilities. I believe that by fostering
an environment of understanding and acceptance, we can create a world where everyone is
recognized for their worth and potential, regardless of their abilities. I am committed to continuing
this mission, advocating for equal opportunities, challenging stereotypes, and working towards a
future where inclusivity and compassion are at the forefront of our collective consciousness.

What's your most memorable moment at UM?

One of my most memorable moments at UM was the “Rock It and Pop It” back-to-school event
organized by the Kindness Club. It took place on our first day back to school and left a profound impact
on me. During the event, we gathered to paint rocks with uplifting messages, which we spread around Guyton for passers-by to find. What made this event truly special was the sense of unity it created. The event radiated joy and positivity, inspiring me to continue planning gatherings that remind people
of the love and appreciation they deserve.
