Get to Know Emily

Why did you choose to attend UM?

It’s closest, good scholarship, where I’ve always wanted to go, fun place.

What would you tell a high school student about your major? What is most important for them to know if they’re interested in pursuing that field of study?

That there is a Photography/Imaging Arts Major because I was told there wasn’t when I was in high-school and chose a different major first. And you might want to go straight to Ole Miss and not go to a junior college because it may take longer, I’ve been in college 6 years including my time in junior college.

Why is your department a special place?

We are all really close-knit. We all end up in the same classes at some point because you have to try everything to figure out which one is your calling. We get really close with our instructors and even call them by first name normally which makes you have an even closer relationship with them.

What are your 3 favorite things about your major/department at UM?

The film department because it was one of the coolest experiences ever, and very rewarding even with all the work and possible mishaps. The hands on work you do and learning with the teacher. Alternate processes because you are again hands on with your artwork and doing it all yourself and really have to work and learn more. Photography because it’s fun setting up your sets and photo shoots and coming up with them and really try and get outside your box.

Can you tell me about a professor or a class you’ve taken that has had the most impact on you?

Brooke White because she’s always pushing me to do better, get more outside my box and do more because she knows I have more in me. She is always so supportive and flexible if something goes wrong or doesn’t work out and just gives her thoughts about it.

What has been one of your most memorable or enjoyable moments at UM?

Being able to do film photography and making so many friends in art. I’ve also loved helping others and supporting others in their art.

What do you hope to do after you graduate? What are your career goals/ plans for postgraduation?

I hope to be a professional photographer or at least be able to do my own brand photography on the side and do well.

Apart from school, how do you spend your time in Oxford? What are your hobbies, favorite places to go, etc.?

I love hanging out with my friends, relaxing at home, spending time with family, watching YouTube, and reading.

What is your go-to meal in Oxford?

Mexican or Chinese

What are you binge watching or reading right now?

A romance. Forensic files and SpongeBob SquarePants always and forever

What are some dream travel destinations?

Scotland, Ireland, New York, somewhere with northern lights

What is one thing you wish you knew as an incoming freshman that you’d tell your past self (about the general college experience)?

That it will be hard but keep going and don’t quit or give up.
