Meet Wilson Eatherly

What is your major and why did you choose it?

I chose my major to be general engineering because I have always been very numbers/problem solving oriented. I chose general engineering over other types because it allowed for me to have a flexible undergraduate degree path. Going into college, I wanted to have a different undergraduate major if I was going to pursue a career in medicine. The traditional biology/chemistry major path may be more streamlined, but I think that engineering has provided me with the skillset to work through problems very well. I think this is a critical skill to have when entering the medical field where you are faced with all kinds of issues that people are looking to you to solve.

Why did you decide to pursue this health profession?

I decided to pursue a career in medicine following a sport injury I had. After having to get surgery, I got the chance to meet with my surgeon and have since gotten to be close with him. He has let me shadow and has provided me with a sense of what his day-to-day life is like as an orthopedic surgeon. I am also fascinated with how the human body works, and I really enjoy piecing together the different elements that make humans so unique.

How has HPAO helped you?

HPAO has helped keep me on track to both graduate on time and with my involvement on campus and around the community. Both Mrs. Kennedy and Dr. Stuart have helped me out so much and helped reassure me that by taking little steps you can go a long way and reach your goals.

What is your most memorable experience working with HPAO?

My most memorable experience working with HPAO was kind of indirect. HPAO has helped me in so many different ways, but last spring Dr. Stuart suggested I get a friend and coach a flag football team through Oxford Parks Commission. This was one of my favorite things I have done all of college. Getting to invest in those kids and take a break from my busy weeks was so refreshing for me. I will definitely be coaching again, and I would have never had this experience without direction from the HPAO.

What are your career goals?

I wish to go to medical school upon graduation and work towards becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon. I have loved my time watching in the OR as well as tagging along for clinic rounds meeting patients.

What is your favorite meal in Oxford?

Volta Philly Steak Gyro.

What are you the happiest doing when you are not studying?

I love being in the woods and hunting. It brings me peace and allows for my mind to reset. Following exams and a busy semester, I love to go out to my camp and just relax and clear my mind with my family and close friends.

My favorite study spot is definitely the dungeon in the honors college.

My favorite study spot is on the second floor of the CME.
