Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry Scholarships

Eligibility:

  • Full-time Student
  • Juniors and Seniors
  • At least 3.0 GPA
  • Major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, forensic chemistry, math, physics
  • Financial need (FAFSA required)

Application process: 

  • No application required.
  • Recipients are selected by the department nomination

About James Parmer Farrell:

The scholarship endowment was established in 1996 by the estate of Mr. James Parmer Farrell (1923-1995), a native of Tunica, MS, who graduated in 1943 from UM with a BS in Chemical Engineering. While a student at UM, he assisted in building much of the equipment used in a new chemical engineering laboratory that was completed in 1943. Mr. Farrell worked in Memphis as a chemist with American Finishing Company, a textile factory that supplied cloth for military uniforms and then with Witco Corp., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of specialty chemical and petroleum products.  

Eligibility:

  • Full-time Student
  • Major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, mathematics, or physics; nutrition and dietetics
  • Junior
  • At least a 3.0 GPA
  • Resident of Smith County, MS as first preference
  • Registered with the Office of Student Disability Services

About Dr. Jerrel K. Yates and Laura A. Yates:

Dr. Yates (1942-2021) earned a B.S. in Mathematics in 1964 and Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1972 from UM.  He taught mathematics and computer science at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia and retired as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics there. Laura A. Yates resides in Columbus, Georgia, having worked at Valdosta State University.

  • Major in Chemistry
  • Incoming freshman or transfer students as first preference

Strong applicants will have:

  • background, achievements, and experience that demonstrate a commitment to contributing to the advancement of women in STEM, regardless of the recipient’s gender or gender identity

Application process: 

  • Interested incoming freshmen students should complete the UM Special Programs and Scholarship Applicationon the Office of Financial Aid website, including the optional diversity essay, by January 10.
  • Interested incoming transfer students should complete the <<>> form.

 

About Ann Corrigan Gill:

The scholarship honors Ann Corrigan Gill (1938-2020), who was born in Meridian, MS, and majored in chemistry at the University of Mississippi. She worked as a chemist at the USDA Sedimentation Lab while her husband, Kinloch, studied and taught at UM. In 1974 the family moved to Greenwood, MS, and Ann became a full-time mother, though she did moonlight as a self-taught computer programmer writing software for the Region VI Mental Health Center where Kinloch was the executive director. After the death of her husband, Ann returned to Oxford and became an avid world traveler, scuba diver, and taught many how to play bridge, all of which allowed her to keep her brain active and meet people from all over the world while having a good time. Even in retirement, Ann remained a member of the American Chemical Society.

STEM/Pre-Health Scholarships offered from Non-UM Organizations

The ACS Scholars Program awards renewable scholarships to underrepresented minority students majoring in undergraduate chemistry-related disciplines, and are also intending to pursue careers in chemistry-related fields. Selected recipients are awarded up to $5,000 per academic year. To date, over 3,000 students have received a funding from the ACS Scholars Program.  Click here for more information.

The William Robert Findley Graduate Chemistry Scholarship is a one-time preferred amount $2,000 scholarship for a student attending graduate school full time in an accredited college or university and majoring in chemistry. The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.25. The scholarship is not automatically renewable, however, recipients may reapply for consideration each year. Click here for more information.

The Richard and Elizabeth Dean Scholarship awards two scholarships in the preferred amount of $5,000 each year for up to four consecutive years to graduating high school students. The selection process shall be based on academic merit with an initial minimum GPA of 4.0. Renewal is conditional upon maintenance of a GPA of 3.25.  This scholarship is renewable only after review and approval of the annual official transcript. Renewal transcript must be submitted to the Office of the Reporter General by July 1 of the year of renewal or the scholarship is forfeited.  Click here for more information.

The Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two students of high scholastic standing and character who have been accepted into or are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (no pre-med, veterinarian or physician assistant) at an approved, accredited medical school. Renewal is conditional upon maintenance of a GPA of 3.25. This scholarship is also available to students who have been accepted into or who are pursuing an approved course of study in the field of psychiatric nursing at the graduate level at accredited medical schools, colleges, or universities. A one-time preferred amount of $5,000 to a deserving female student who is a US citizen attending medical school. The selection process is based on academic merit with a minimum GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent GPA on the scale used by the applicable educational institution. The recipient may reapply for the scholarship each year, but is not guaranteed the award. Click here for more information.

A letter of acceptance into a nursing program or a transcript stating the applicant is in a nursing program must be included with the application.  Click here for more information.

A one-time $2,500 award given annually to two students in financial need who are residents in the District of Columbia who have been accepted or are currently enrolled in a Nursing program at the University of the District of Columbia.  A minimum GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent GPA on the scale used by the institution is required. This scholarship is strictly administered by the University of the District of Columbia.  Click here for more information.

The Madeline Pickett (Halbert) Cogswell Nursing Scholarship, in the amount of $2,500, is awarded to two students who are accepted or enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. Applicants must be members, descendant of members or be eligible for membership in NSDAR. The DAR member number of the mother, grandmother or step-mother, who is a current dues paying member, must be on the Application. Click here for more information.

A one-time $2,000 scholarship for two students who are in financial need and who have been accepted or are currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing. A letter of acceptance into the Nursing Program or the transcript stating that the applicant is in the Nursing Program must be enclosed with the application. Preference will be given to candidates from the Lowell, MA area. Click here for more information.

The Occupational/Physical Therapy Scholarship, in the amount of $2,000, is awarded to two students  who are in financial need and have been accepted or are attending an accredited school of occupational therapy (including art, music, or physical therapy). Click here for more information.

The Leo W. and Alberta V. Thomas Utz Scholarship – Science is a scholarship in the amount of $4,000 year for up to four consecutive years to students who are pursing undergraduate or graduate degrees in Science. Renewal is conditional upon maintenance of a GPA of 3.25 based on a 4.0 scale used by the educational institution.  An official transcript must be submitted to the Office of the Reporter General each year by July 10th or the scholarship is forfeited. The Edward G. and Helen A. Borgen Secondary Teacher Scholarship is a one-time preferred amount of up to $1,500 awarded to one student who is twenty-five (25) years of age or older. Applicants must be studying to teach at the secondary school level.  Applicants must have at least a 3.5 GPA, be at least a college sophomore, and attend or plan on attending an accredited college or university.  The award is based on academic merit and is not automatically renewable, however, recipients may reapply for consideration as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.
