Campus community invited to connect at annual event

OXFORD, Miss. – Whether it's family dinner, brunch with friends or a work potluck, shared meals build a sense of community, and those dining experiences often spur thought-provoking conversations.

University of Mississippi students, employees, alumni and community members are invited for a free meal and fellowship at the annual Longest Table event on Sunday (Sept. 29).

The shared meal, which includes vegetarian and vegan options, takes place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Circle outside the Lyceum. The goal is to create a welcoming environment where everyone can connect in a relaxed setting, said Shawnboda Mead, UM vice chancellor for diversity and community engagement.

"The Longest Table is open to anyone who values community engagement and meaningful conversation," Mead said. "It's particularly appealing to those interested in building relationships and learning from different viewpoints.

"We believe that sharing a meal together can spark new ideas and build lasting relationships. This event encourages participants to engage with one another, learn from different perspectives and strengthen our campus community."

Attendees will find a list of discussion prompts that encourage meaningful conversations among tablemates.

Provost Noel Wilkin plans to deliver opening remarks at 5 p.m.

Created in 2019, the annual event honors the legacy of distinguished alumnus James Meredith, the university's first Black student.
