University's Research Excellence Fuels R1 Status
Carnegie Classification reaffirms UM's place among the nation's elite institutions

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi continues its standing among the nation's top-tier research institutions, maintaining its R1 designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The "R1: Doctoral University – Very High Research Spending and Doctorate Production" distinction is the highest in the Carnegie system and awarded to universities demonstrating exceptional levels of research spending and doctoral degree production.
Since first achieving this prestigious status in 2015 and having it reaffirmed in 2018 and 2021, UM has demonstrated a decade of sustained commitment to research excellence and scholarly innovation.
Maintaining this status reaffirms the university's role as a leader in cutting-edge research, innovation and scholarship across various disciplines.

"This achievement reflects the dedication of our faculty, researchers and students, as well as our ongoing commitment to advancing knowledge and addressing global challenges," Chancellor Glenn Boyce said. "As an R1 institution, the University of Mississippi continues to drive economic growth, foster innovation and prepare the next generation of scholars and leaders."
The R1 designation continues to provide significant advantages to Ole Miss, which ranks among just 187 universities nationwide to achieve this highest classification.
The R1 status strengthens the university's ability to:
- Secure competitive research funding
- Attract top-level faculty
- Build valuable partnerships with industry and government.
For students, the R1 designation ensures:
- Advanced research opportunities
- Access to cutting-edge resources
- Strong mentorship programs.
"Our research enterprise continues to expand in exciting ways, tackling increasingly complex challenges that matter to Mississippians and beyond," said John Higginbotham, vice chancellor of research and economic development. "Maintaining our R1 status for nearly a decade has been instrumental in bringing exceptional talent to our campus – both established researchers and promising students alike.
"This designation affirms what we already know: that the University of Mississippi stands among the nation's research leaders, driving innovation across disciplines and creating meaningful impact through scholarship."
