JTC 25: From Dreamer to Doer

Bailee Harris finds voice and purpose at Ole Miss DeSoto Center

This story is part of the 2025 Journey to Commencement series, which celebrates the pinnacle of the academic year by highlighting University of Mississippi students and their outstanding academic and personal journeys from college student to college graduate.

From a young age, Bailee Harris knew she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps and go to college. But she didn’t just walk the same path; she carved out her own.

A graduate of DeSoto Central High School and Northwest Mississippi Community College, the Walls native enrolled at the University of Mississippi at DeSoto Center campus in Southaven with a vision shaped by both inspiration and ambition.

“I was familiar with the 2+2 program because my mom completed her degree through Ole Miss-DeSoto,” Harris said. “It allowed me to plan for my future, stay close to home and maintain financial stability while I studied.”

Initially pursuing a degree in integrated marketing communications, Harris soon realized that her true strengths and interests spanned a wider range. Instead of staying on a path that didn’t quite fit, she pivoted — thoughtfully and intentionally. She changed her major to multi-disciplinary studies, designing a custom plan that included journalism, professional writing and business.

And that future is already taking shape.

While maintaining a full-time class load, Harris became an indispensable part of the Ole Miss-DeSoto community. She worked as a Writing Center consultant, served as the voice behind the campus newsletter and helped shape the campus’ digital presence as a marketing and communications student worker.

"Bailee always showed her true caring nature when working with students,” said Jeanine Rauch, senior lecturer and Writing Center director. “She made every visitor feel supported and capable."

Harris’ most lasting contribution came when she founded the Ole Miss-DeSoto Communicator’s Club, a space where students can connect with business leaders, marketing professionals and social media influencers in the DeSoto County community.

Her efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Bailee earned statewide recognition for her work, including awards for her social media content and student newsletter contributions. She was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Sigma Lambda honor societies and graduated cum laude in December 2024.

Her experience also helped open professional doors. After interning with the DeSoto County News, Bailee was hired as the membership services coordinator for the Hernando Main Street Chamber of Commerce, where she applies her skills in marketing, event coordination and community engagement.

“Watching Bailee grow during her time at the chamber has been nothing short of inspiring,” said Sibonie Swatznya, the organization's executive director. “Her dedication and creativity have made a lasting impact on our team and community. I can’t wait to see the amazing things she does next.”

Though her title has changed, Harris’ mission remains the same: make a difference through communication.

During her time as a student, Harris also reached a personal milestone: marrying her biggest supporter, Austin.

Balancing academics, work and married life was not easy, but her determination to succeed never wavered. As they prepare to welcome their first child — due on the same day as Harris’ Commencement ceremony — their journey together enters an exciting new chapter.
