Jeffrey R Watt
Brief Bio
Jeffrey R. Watt is the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Professor of History. After completing his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, he joined the University of Mississippi faculty in 1988. Watt teaches a variety of courses on the history of early modern Europe and is the author of four books: The Protestant Inquisition? The Consistory in Calvin's Geneva (University of Rochester, forthcoming in 2020); The Scourge of Demons: Possession, Lust, and Witchcraft in a Seventeenth-Century Convent (University of Rochester Press); Choosing Death: Suicide and Calvinism in Early Modern Geneva (Truman State University Press, 2001); and The Making of Modern Marriage: Matrimonial Control and the Rise of Sentiment in Neuchatel, 1550-1800 (Cornell University Press, 1992). He is also the editor of eleven books, most notably Les Registres du Consistoire de Geneve au temps de Calvin, volumes 6-14 (Droz, 2012-20). These are scholarly editions, co-edited with Isabella M. Watt, of the records of the Consistory, a morals court created by the reformer John Calvin. Watt's service to the profession has included a stint as Vice President (2009) and President (2010) of the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference, a scholarly organization with approximately 1,500 members.
