Caroline Caroline Clutton
Mentor: 2018
Year: Sophomore
Major: Biology
Minor: Spanish

I attended Bio Bootcamp last year and believe that it greatly prepared me for Bisc 160. I loved my mentor and met some of my first college friends during bootcamp week while getting a realistic feel for how college science classes were going to work. My advice for incoming freshman is to remain open in your transition to college so that you can meet some new people and figure out how to be best prepared for the work load.

Kyleigh Kyleigh Comley

Put yourself on a schedule, study biology everyday, and find the study habits that work best for you! Make very good use of your resources, and do whatever you need to do to feel confident walking into test day. Good luck and Hotty Toddy!

Benji Benji Creel

School should be your number 1 priority, but there is more to college than going to class and studying. Get involved, make friends, and have fun!!

Juliana Juliana DiPaolo

BISC 160/162 is not impossible! Put in good work everyday and don’t wait until the last minute to study— you will be way more successful in your studies. Talk to your professors, and don’t be afraid to get help! Good luck!

Isaiah Isaiah Edwards

I attended Biology Bootcamp in 2016, and I have to say it was a very positive experience. Not only did it allow me to get some insight on the structure/difficult of the class, it also allowed for an early start on developing study skills and habits, which is paramount in determining one’s success in the class.

Summer Summer Jefferson
Mentor: 2017-2018
Year: Junior
Major: Biochemistry
Hometown: Cumming, GA

Study a little bit every day, not just for biology but all of your classes! Also, go to SI and office hours. Talking to other students about the subject helps you understand it better and reveals any possible weaknesses in your understanding of the subject.
Andrew Andrew Ladner
Mentor: 2017
Year: Sophomore
Major: Chemistry
Hometown: Leakesville, MS

College is actually extremely fun. Make sure to branch out, get involved, and have a good time. But always remember schoolwork comes first!

Jamal Jamal Lydie
Mentor: 2018
Year: Junior
Major: Biology
Minor: Psychology

Preparation and organization are key tools for success in this class and any other class offered on campus. I advise this incoming class to combine these traits with a strong will to develop as an individual, and the results will pay off nicely.

Denise Denise Frantz

Always stay on top of work by reviewing notes, reading the textbook, and asking questions. Bio bootcamp prepared me very well for bio 160 and I made some really great friends when I did bootcamp! Make the most of all of your time and you'll do great too.

Madison Madison Quick
Mentor: 2018

Attending Bio Bootcamp was one of the best decisions I made as a incoming freshman. Be organized, study the material gradually, and do not be afraid to ask any questions you may have. BISC 160 is definitely a tough course, but succeeding is more than possible, as long as you put forth the effort.

Shade Shade Smith
Mentor: 2018
Year: Sophomore
Major: Biology
Hometown: Moorhead, MS

Getting an education is the reason that you attend college, and I can promise that biobootcamp will be a very rewarding experience. Although, there is more to life than just the inside of a dormitory or study room, go out and experience it.

Landis Landis Llewelyn
Mentor: 2018
Year: Sophomore
Major: Biochemistry
Minor: Biology and Society and Health Other: Pre-Med
Hometown:Louisville, MS

I did not attend Biology Bootcamp at the start of my freshman year and was at an extreme disadvantage compared to my classmates that did. BISC 160 and 162 are both extremely challenging courses here at Ole Miss but will thoroughly prepare you for higher-level courses in Biology and the MCAT. My biggest piece of advice for incoming freshman taking this course, is to push through this difficult class and not give up, because it will be so worth it in the end!! I cannot wait to share my study tips and advice to the new freshman class and hope I can make the transition into BIO 160 easier!

Beth Beth Sherbo
Mentor: 2017
Year: Sophomore
Major: Biology

Other: Pre-Med
Hometown: Willow Springs, MO

Succeeding in college is all about time management. You will most likely have to study much more than you did in high school, but the best thing to do is try different study habits until you find what works for you. Its also important to get involved and build relationships with your peers. You will be amazed with the amount of growth you see in yourself!

Megan2 Megan Stubbs
Mentor: 2017
Year: Sophomore
Major: Biology
Minor: Spanish, Chemistry
Other: Pre-Med
Hometown: Birmingham, AL

Have self-confidence and try your best; the Bio Bootcamp week, the BISC 160 course, and the first year of college will challenge you indefinitely, but if you believe in yourself and give your 110% always, you'll be surprised by what you're capable of achieving.
Chinwe Chinwe Udemgba
Mentor: 2018
Year: Sophomore
Major: Chemistry
Hometown: Natchez, MS

Find out what study method works for you! Whether it’s in groups, by yourself, listening to classical music, or anything else, it helps to know what works for you. If you’re going to spend hours studying, you might as well actually absorb the information that you're learning.

I was a Bio Bootcamp participant last year; not only is it a fantastic way to get a head start in biology and develop crucial study habits, it is also very fun! Although Bio 160/162 is a difficult course, you can come out with a good grade if you are willing to put in the effort. That includes reviewing your notes daily, attending SI sessions, and going to office hours. Good luck!

Freshman year is all about finding out who you really are, what you really can accomplish, and what is the best way you can accomplish those things. BISC 160 will reveal to you how serious college is and help you to gain the positive and working mindset that will be needed to get you through college.

Fischer Fischer Clarke

I attended Bio Bootcamp last year and it really helped me with BISC 160 and 162. It really prepared me for the structure and difficulty of the class. It is also a good way to meet new friends and find people to help study with.

Alex Alex Oliveri
Mentor: 2018
Year: Sophomore
Major: Biology
Hometown: Mandeville, LA

Biology Bootcamp is a great introduction to college life and managing coursework. Doing well in college depends upon how much you apply yourself. You need to put in a lot of effort to succeed, but be sure to balance your time by getting involved and making friends.

Alexis Alexis Harbin
Mentor: 2018
Year: Sophomore
Major: Dietetics and Nutrition
Minor: Spanish
Other: Pre-Med
Hometown: Pascagoula, MS

Although I was hesitant to register as a camper my incoming year, I thoroughly enjoyed Biology Bootcamp (2017) and learned so many valuable lessons that I would not have learned otherwise. As a mentor, I am hoping to share the things I have learned and help incoming students adjust in the classroom and everyday college life. My top tip for succeeding in this class is to figure out your own effective ways of studying and implement them in your everyday life. However, don’t get too stressed and make time for fun college memories and new friends!!

Elyse Elyse Smith
Mentor: 2017-2018
Year: Sophomore
Major: Pharmacy
Hometown: Madison, MS

Freshman year is full of new challenges and adventures, so start the year with an open mindset and the flexibility to face those changes with a positive attitude. There will be hardships and failures, but every one of them is a learning opportunity. Get ready to fall in love with biology and enjoy every minute of the year even if it’s spent in the library. You’ll make some of your best friends pulling all-nighters!

Rita Rita Walsh
Mentor: 2018
Year: Junior
Major: Biology
Minor: Spanish
Other: Pre-Vet
Hometown: Chicago, IL

Bisc 160 is very challenging, but it is not nearly as impossible as it is said to be. I would suggest that all incoming students prioritize their school work and be sure to allocate time for studying alongside their day-to-day assignments. Reading the chapters before lecture is a key way to get ahead and to ensure that the content will not be too overwhelming. If you keep a strict schedule for studying, you will be able to find time for school, and for friends and extra activities after class.
