Careers With an MBA Degree
An “MBA” is more than just letters after your name. To employers, it says that you’ve put in the time to build expertise that might have taken you years to get on the job. As a result, the degree program sets you up to advance inside your organization — or land a new position.
And while an Ole Miss degree is already a great value — as a public institution, our tuition is a fraction of the cost of many private alternatives — many of our students discover their employers may help cover the cost of their MBA, making the value even better.
Of course, by the time you graduate, you can see it’s an investment that often pays for itself. Median salaries for top executives are about $100,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics — and CEO pay is about twice that.
Ole Miss MBA grads go into fields including:

Admission Requirements
Thank you for your interest in the Ole Miss MBA program. The application process is your opportunity to tell us who you are, why you seek admission to our program, and how you will succeed in our program.
Please note that the admissions requirements listed below are the minimum required for consideration for admission. Admission is competitive.
To apply to the online MBA program, complete the University of Mississippi's Application for Graduate Admission and follow the instructions to submit all required materials. A $50 application fee is required.
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution. Please send transcripts directly to:
University of Mississippi Graduate School
P.O. Box 1848
54 Galtney-Lott Plaza
University, MS 38677-1848
Requirements
The GMAT or GRE is waived for students with an overall GPA of 3.5 (or higher) or a GPA of 3.5 (or higher) on the most recent 60 hours of coursework. We do not waive the test requirement for individuals who already possess a graduate degree, professional degree, or significant professional work experience.
The GMAT or GRE is required for all students who wish to be considered for a graduate assistantship.
Candidates who do not qualify for a waiver must submit an official GMAT or GRE score that is no more than five years old. Candidates must have a minimum GMAT score of 485 or an equivalent GRE score of 302 (Total of the Verbal and Quantitative sections).
While the Admission Committee considers the entire application, if your GMAT (or GRE equivalent) is below 485, we recommend retaking the exam in order to be competitive for admission. Significant preparation, ideally two months of study, for either exam, is encouraged.
Testing information can be found here: GMAT | GRE
Sending Scores
The University of Mississippi Institution Code for both the GMAT and GRE tests is 1840. The Department code for the GRE is 5199.
All test scores should be sent directly to the Graduate School at gschool@olemiss.edu.
If you did not request that your score be sent to Ole Miss at the time of testing, please contact ETS to have your GRE score sent or GMAC to have your GMAT score sent to the Graduate School at gschool@olemiss.edu.
If you did not earn your undergraduate degree in the U.S., there is a minimum required English language proficiency exam score(s). (Citizens of countries on the exemption list and students who graduated from institutions in those countries are not required to submit scores.)
Candidates must submit a current resume via the online application. We do not have a format preference.
A candidate must submit a Statement of Purpose with his or her name included via the online application. The Statement of Purpose is a short essay in which an applicant reflects on the contribution the MBA degree will make to his or her future success and the special characteristics that he or she brings to the MBA program.
The typed Statement of Purpose (about 400 words) should address the following questions:
- Why have you chosen to pursue the MBA?
- How will these studies help you attain your career goals?
- Is there anything you wish us to know that is not reflected in the other application materials?
*Please be sure that your name is included on your Statement of Purpose.
If you would like to inquire about the status of your application, please get in touch with Amy Johnson.
Completion of two prerequisite undergraduate courses is required prior to enrolling in MBA courses: Principles of Accounting (UM ACCY 201 or ACCY 202) and Business Finance (UM FIN 331), or their equivalents. Courses must be completed with a “C” or higher.
It is possible that applicants have completed the above courses or their equivalencies in undergraduate coursework, particularly if a degree has been awarded in a Bachelor’s of Business Administration. To confirm that you meet the prerequisite course requirements, you may email a copy of your unofficial transcript to Amy Johnson for further review.
Admission decisions are not based on successful completion of these courses. However, admitted students are not permitted to enroll in MBA courses until the prerequisite courses have been completed with a grade of "C" or better. These courses can be completed as part of an undergraduate program or they can be taken at any accredited institution. Additionally, they are both now offered through the University’s Independent Study Office, also known as iStudy. http://www.outreach.olemiss.edu/istudy)
While the program is designed to begin in the summer or fall term, students may enter the program in any semester. However, if the candidate's goal is to complete the program in one year, it is unlikely that it can be achieved if he or she enters the program in the spring.
To be considered for admission for one of the three possible entry points, all application materials must be received by the following deadlines:
- Summer Admission (starting in May) - April 1
- Fall Admission (starting in late August) - July 1
- Spring Admission** (starting in mid-January) - November 1
**Please contact the Director of MBA Administration, Ashley McGee, for more information about the timeline.
Admitted candidates will receive an acceptance email from the MBA Office. If a candidate is admitted to the program, he or she must respond to indicate whether he or she plans to join the program.
The Ole Miss Graduate School also sends emails to accepted candidates based on the department's decision.
If your application is complete, but you wish to retake the GMAT or GRE before your file is reviewed and a decision is made, please notify Amy Johnson and indicate the new test date.
A limited number of assistantships are available for outstanding MBA applicants. All admitted students are considered for assistantships based on undergraduate GPA, GMAT scores, and other academic criteria. Assistantships offer a partial graduate tuition waiver (approximately 75 percent) for the fall and spring terms and a monetary stipend in exchange for approximately ten hours of work per week within the School of Business.
Frequently Asked Questions
Students may apply for up to six hours in transfer credit for courses that closely match those in our program. Per Graduate School regulations, the transfer request cannot be done until 15 credits have been completed in the Ole Miss MBA. The application can be found online. Both the MBA program and the Graduate School must approve the request.
International students are encouraged to review the Application Process and the international admission page. We encourage early applications (submitted at least 6 months before the anticipated start date) to give campus offices enough time to review all foreign credentials.
If admitted, it will also take time to obtain the study visa. Minimum required English language proficiency exam score(s) if you did not earn your undergraduate degree in the U.S. (Citizens of countries on the exemption list and students who graduated from institutions in those countries are not required to submit scores.)
The Intro to Accounting and Business Finance (not personal finance) prerequisites may be taken at any regionally accredited college or university.
You may apply prior to taking the prerequisites, but you will not be able to enroll in MBA courses until you have successfully completed those courses with a C or higher, and the MBA program can verify this with final official transcripts. Please see our Admissions page for further details on taking the prerequisite courses with The University of Mississippi.

Applicants for the online MBA program with 5+ years of post-graduate work experience may qualify for a test waiver. If you think you might meet this requirement, contact Amy Johnson to confirm details.
Please send official undergraduate transcripts for the application directly to the Graduate School.

Only admitted students are eligible to take MBA courses.
On a minimal basis, students may transfer from the campus MBA program to the online MBA program.
Please meet with Ashley McGee, MBA Director, to further discuss and advise. We are happy to review on a case-by-case basis. This also applies to students in the online program who wish to transfer to the campus program.
On-Campus students can reach out to the Graduate School for any additional scholarships or assistantships in other areas on campus. There are no assistantships available for the Online program due to the face-to-face component of working within the Business School.
While the Admission Committee considers the entire application, if your GMAT or GRE score is below 485, we recommend retaking the exam to be competitive for admission.
If you plan to retake the exam, please get in touch with Amy Johnson so that your application will not be reviewed until your new score arrives. If you retake the exam, you must adhere to the deadline to be eligible for the term for which you applied.
