The Certificate in Elementary Education K-6 provides a structured pathway for secondary teachers seeking to earn an Elementary K-6 endorsement. The program is designed for licensed secondary (7-12) educators with a 5-year standard renewable license and at least three years of teaching experience.

Pre-Applications are now open for individuals interested in partial program funding through the Mississippi Teacher Residency Program. Individuals selected for this program will receive

  • Tuition for the first 12 hours of coursework
  • Vouchers for the Foundations of Reading Test
  • Stipend to assist with textbooks and technology
  • An assigned mentor for support during the first year of classroom placement

    The Certificate in Elementary Education K-6 is more than just a credential. It offers secondary educators the opportunity to broaden their teaching expertise and expand their career options.

    The certificate program consists of the following 15 credit hours:

    • EDEL 610 – STEM Methods (3 credit hours)
    • EDRD 655 – Early Literacy Instruction I & II (6 credit hours)
    • EDRD 614 – Reading Diagnosis and Intervention (3 credit hours)
    • EDRD 602 – Reading & Writing Across the Curriculum (3 credit hours)

    Educators completing this coursework will also be required by MDE to pass the Foundations of Reading Test (190) to earn the K-6 endorsement.

    The following is required for admission:
    • Official Transcript
    • A letter from a current administrator to confirm at least 3 years of Teaching Experience
    • Standard 5-year renewable license
