About the Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education

The Ph.D. in Counselor Education develops counselor educators who are prepared to be skillful teachers, expert supervisors, insightful quantitative and qualitative researchers, and outstanding professional faculty at a college or university. 

While the Ph.D. in Counselor Education continues to help practitioners hone clinical skills developed in the Master's program, the Ph.D. program additionally focuses on developing effective counselor educators.   

The Ph.D. in Counselor Education is specifically designed to prepare aspiring faculty. Recent graduates of the program have accepted faculty positions at:

  • The University of North Florida
  • Nova Southeastern University
  • Mississippi State University
  • University of New Orleans
  • University of Louisiana Lafayette
  • University of North Texas
  • University of Kentucky
  • University of Oklahoma

The program is a residency program on the Oxford Campus. However, the program does offer assistantship and co-teaching opportunities at the University of Mississippi Tupelo and/or DeSoto Regional Centers.

The Ph.D. in Counselor Education is more than just a doctoral degree. It integrates advanced coursework, research, and clinical practice, with a focus on counseling techniques, ethics, cultural issues, program evaluation, and supervision.

Students applying to the Ph.D. in Counselor Education must meet the following requirements. Students must have:

  • Hold a completed a master's degree in counseling or related degree program. Preference will be for applicants who are graduates of CACREP accredited programs.
  • Complete a Graduate School application online, uploading the following supplemental materials:
    • official transcripts
    • statement of purpose
    • resume
    • contact information for three references
  • Participate in an interview with faculty.

To properly complete the application process for fall admission, students must submit all application materials before the following deadlines:

  • Priority application deadline: March 1

Coun 720: Adv Professional Identity and Ethics

This course offers an advanced exploration of professional identity and ethical issues in counselor education. It is designed to equip future counselor educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to instill future students with a strong sense of professional identity as counselors and to understand the role of ethics in guiding their practice.

Coun 722: Adv. Multicultural Counseling & Advocacy

Multicultural Issues in Counseling and is intended to be a didactic and experiential opportunity for theoretical and practical examination as well as application in the continued development of multicultural competency.

Coun 735: Grant Writing

This course will support students in the development of skills required for the completion and submission of competitive grant proposals. Through interactive learning and the completion of an actual grant proposal, the course will focus on planning, research, evaluation techniques, budgeting, and how to effectively communicate issues and needs clearly and concisely.
