The Master of Education in Counselor Education at the University of Mississippi prepares students to become highly-skilled professionals who provide flexible, consumer-oriented therapy that addresses students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development needs.
The Master of Education in Counselor Education has two emphasis areas, Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling.
Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Clinical Mental Health Counseling is a distinct profession with national standards for education, training and clinical practice. Clinical mental health counselors are highly-skilled professionals who provide flexible, consumer-oriented therapy. They combine traditional psychotherapy with a practical, problem-solving approach that creates a dynamic and efficient path for change and problem resolution.
Clinical Mental Health Counseling Degree Plan
School Counseling
School Counseling creates counselors that are certified/licensed educators, making them uniquely qualified to address all students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development needs. Students in this program learn skills such as designing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student success.

Other Academic Requirements
M.Ed. in Counselor Education candidates must successfully complete supervised counseling practicum experiences that total a minimum of 100 clock hours over a full academic term. For internship, students must complete 600 clock hours of supervised counseling internship in roles and settings with clients relevant to their clinical mental health or school specialty area.
All M.Ed. in Counselor Education students are required to earn a passing score on the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) in order to graduate.
Students applying to the M.Ed. in Counselor Education must meet the following requirements. Students must have:
- An undergraduate degree with a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours of their coursework
- A current resume
- A statement of purpose
- 3 completed reference forms
- Interview with faculty
To properly complete the application process for fall admission, students must submit all application materials before the deadline:
