When and why did you decide to major in biology?

I chose to major in biology during my college application process in high school. From an early age, I was drawn to the challenges and complexities of math and science, finding immense joy in exploring these subjects. Additionally, my aspiration to pursue a career in dentistry made biology an essential foundation for achieving success in this field.

What were some significant accomplishments/favorite memories at UM?

Defending my honors thesis in front of my professors, peers, and family stands out as an unforgettable accomplishment. It was an intellectually challenging experience that pushed me beyond my academic limits and marked the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance at Ole Miss.

Another cherished memory was my time as a walk-on wide receiver for the Ole Miss football team. Beating Alabama during my senior year was nothing short of magical. The energy of our fans storming the field, defeating a team that would go on to win the national championship, and even crossing paths with Katy Perry made it an unforgettable moment.

However, no achievement was more meaningful than walking across the stage at graduation. That moment represented not only my academic success but also the countless challenges overcome and the unwavering support of those who believed in me along the way.

Please tell us about your educational/career path since UM.

My educational and career path since Ole Miss has been a journey of growth, resilience, and perseverance. It didn’t start smoothly—I vividly remember earning a 54% on my first college exam in BISC 160. That moment was devastating; I cried, convinced my dreams of graduating and becoming a dentist were over. It was an academic low point I had never experienced before and have not encountered since.

However, this challenge became a turning point. It forced me to reevaluate my approach to learning and commit fully to my goals. This mindset shift laid the foundation for the rest of my time at Ole Miss, propelled me through dental school, and carried me through the rigors of my oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. Today, as a healthcare professional, that experience continues to remind me of the importance of adaptability, determination, and hard work in achieving success.
